Art classes are therapeutic at Family Resource Centre

-

Individuals enjoyed an afternoon of free relaxing art classes last week at the Gorey Family Resource Centre on Charlotte Row.

Centre Manager Anita Carroll said a lot of the participants are recovering from cancer, and find the classes very therapeutic.

‘It is a quiet time for them and a time to reflect. Our inhouse artist Angie Stehley is great at motivating them,’ said Anita.

Gorey Family Resource Centre opened to the public in 2010 and receives funding from TUSLA. They offer a very broad range of supports, activities and services to the community of Gorey.

The overall aim is to work with individuals and families to improve the wellbeing of parents and children.

‘A lot of people don’t really know what we do or are about,’ said Anita.

The Centre has numerous support services such as Outreach Clinics, a room for Family Access Visits, Drop-In Support, Counselling services and External support services. They do a Monday craft group, men’s development group, Wexford traveller community health programme, Wednesday women’s group, English as a second language and art classes.

‘The only thing we charge for is the counselling service,’ said Anita. ‘It is only €5 and that is simply to cover the cost of tissues, tea and biscuits.’
