SOCCER AWARDS

On Friday, June 8, St Cormac’s hosted a presentation night in Kelly’s of the Harrow to honour some of their winning teams of the past season. The Youths’ Team, league winners, were presented with their medals by Gerry Foran.

Pádraig Moran and Eoin Murphy were jointly awarded the title of ‘Player of the Year’ for their ourstanding contribution throughout the season and Jamie DempseyDoyle received the award for the ‘Goal of the Season’. This was in addition to the Wexford Football League Divisional Player of the Year which Jamie had already been awarded. The top goal scorer for the Youths was Nathan Dickson. Eoin Murphy was honoured once again later in the evening, picking up the trophy for ‘Player of the Year’ with the Men’s ‘B’ team.

The Men’s ‘A’ team were also on hand to collect their league winners’ medals and Johnny Fitzgerald was selected as ‘Player of the Year’. Phil Donnelly was awarded the trophy for ‘Goal of the Year’ and Brendan ‘Frikki’ Burke was the top goalscorer. Also on view on the night was the under-14 league trophy won by the under-14 girls’ team the previous night and this was proudly displayed by their manager, Séamus Doran.

This has been a great season for St Cormac’s, winning three league titles with the ladies’ team gaining promotion as runners-up in their division.

CONGRATULATIONS

Pedigree shone through in the under-14 girls’ last league match of the season with Sophie Kirwan, grand-daughter of Séamus Kirwan, scoring a hat-trick before the break to ensure that her team would clinch the league title.

Away to Ross Celtic, they needed to win and did so emphatically and with style. A free kick early in play was smashed to the back of the net from 30 meters by Sophie. Five minutes later, the relentless pressure forced another foul from Celtic and again Sophie stunned the keeper with an unstoppable shot. A third free kick, a penalty, awarded when Jessica Foran was taken down in the box, was cooly slotted home by Sophie for her hat-trick.

New Ross started well in the second half and pulled one back after creating some good scorable chances. Our defenders regrouped, gained control once more and made it impossible for New Ross to score again. Emerson Doran, who had starred not just in the game but all season, sent a stunning shot to the top right for our fourth goal just before the final whistle, to restore the three goal margin. After the game, having received their Division 2 League shield from Wexford Schoolgirls representative, Barry Dempsey, they stopped in Lawler’s of Morriscastle where Edward Redmond, a Harrow man, was delighted to show them top class hospitality.

Team: Colette Mythen, Eva Corrigan, Michaela Milling, Sophie Kirwan, Shona Procter-Laird, Belle Kisov, Abby Gibbons, Katlyn Redmond, Emerson Doran, Bronagh Kenny, Jessica Foran, Katie Burke and Taylor Gibbons. Well done to all the team and to their manager, Séamus Doran.
