AN INVESTIGATION is under way into a gorse bush fire which broke out on Saturday evening at Creagh.

Swift action by the Gorey Fire Service prevented the large blaze from spreading to Gorey Woods, which surrounds numerous residential areas and Gorey Town Park. ‘We got the call about 6 p.m. that evening,’ said a fire service spokesman. ‘The fire came within 30 feet of the woods. Our main objective was

to contain and stop it before it caught fire.’

Clouds of smoke billowed over the area, but no houses in the nearby residential areas, such as Willow Park and Creagh Demesne, had to be evacuated as a result of the fire.

‘The cause of the gorse bush fire is not yet known,’ said the spokesman. ‘It could have been a broken bottle, we just don’t know with this hot weather we are getting. It is hard to tell.’

Two crews spent four hours bringing the fire under control and damping down the area.
