Charity shops owner in court over unpaid rates bill of €2,921

-

RATE collector Donal Gordon from Wexford County Council gave evidence in the District Court against cancer campaigner and charity shops owner Bart Murphy over an unpaid rates bill.

Judge Bernadette Owens was told that €2,921 was owed in July of 2017 – an amount due from a period in 2014 and 2015 – and that it remained outstanding.

The premises in question was at Redmond Square in Wexford and it closed down in 2015.

Murphy from 10 Mullaunmore, Ballon, County Carlow appeared and stated that he had 25 shops, seven of them in County Wexford.

He described the enterprise as ‘not for profit’. He accepted that the money was owed but pleaded that his only income was the widow’s pension.

Murphy noted that another case, relating to different premises was due in court shortly.

The judge made out a decree requiring payment of the €2,921 and added an order to pay legal costs of €160.

She remarked that collecting the money was work for another day.
