One-way system to begin in August at The Monument

-

A one way traffic system is to be trialled at The Monument at McCurtain Street in August, according to local councillor Malcolm Byrne.

The trial will come into force from late August for a few weeks to see if it will improve traffic flow and safety in that part of Gorey town.

Cllr Byrne has been seeking this for quite some time and, if it makes the area safer and allow for better traffic flow, it will become permanent.

‘There can be traffic build-ups in that part of Gorey, particularly around school opening and closing times,’ said Cllr Byrne. ‘It is also dangerous junction as sometimes cars do not stop as they care coming from the Carnew Road into town.’

There will be a consultation around the planned one-way systems, but there is a general agreement that it should be trailed. ‘If it works, it will be made permanent,’ added Cllr Byrne.

Cllr Byrne also said they have been working to make this part of the town much safer.

‘The footpath at Kilnahue should be in place before schools resume in September,’ said Cllr Byrne. ‘We have looked at other possible solutions to improve traffic flow.’

He said that there has also been an issue with cars parking at the entrance to Creagh Woods and blocking access to that estate.
