Well done the Junior Achievers!

- By SARA GAHAN

FOR the first time, the Junior Achievement Programme partnered with Wexford County Council volunteers from Gorey Municipal District.

District Manager Amanda Byrne, Enda Flynn, Maura Higgins and Tony Quirke volunteered to teach the programme to Riverchapel National School for a total of five weeks to first and third class pupils. Junior Achievement teaches young people about the world of work and specifically targets those at risk of early school leaving.

The Junior Achievement Programme included ‘Our City’, a third class project which introduces the pupils to how the cities and towns are planned through interactive activities. They built their very own city, learned about blueprints, planned which zone their building will be built in and made an advertisement for a new business in their city,

The Gorey Municipal District volunteers were part of a team of 20 Wexford County Council volunteers who participated in Junior Achievement programmes in County Wexford across the 2017/2018 school year.

Ms Byrne said that the Junior Achievement project emerged from a meeting of the Courtown Local Policing Forum where it was agreed that the Forum should develop as many links as possible with the school. She thanked principal Martina Prendergast, class teachers and the pupils for the warm welcome given to the Junior Achievement Volunteers.

Denise Power, area manager of Junior Achievement South East Office, said they were delighted to extend their partnership with Wexford County Council to reach students from Gorey Municipal District.

She added with the support of partners like Wexford County Council, they are able to connect students with the world outside their classrooms in a way which is both meaningful and educational.
