Arthur leading the drive for more volunteers

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

A Screen man has joined the Irish Cancer Society in appealing for volunteer drivers across County Wexford to collect patients from their homes and bring them to appointments in Dublin. Arthur Quinn has been undertaking trips to Dublin and Waterford as part of the Irish Cancer Society’s Volunteer Drive Service since 2013 and in that time has clocked up over 90 drives.

Known to many having served as Chairman of the Wexford Supporters Club, Arthur first got involved after reading an article in his local paper and now he’s hoping that others will be similarly inspired.

‘I first read about the service in the paper,’ he said. ‘They were looking for volunteers and I thought, I could do that. I have free time and a car available, I am in good health and I have the time. It is a pleasure to be able to help someone who is in need of transport and I hope to continue with the service for some considerable time.’

While Arthur has clocked up quite a bit of mileage, he is keen to stress that people can do as many or as few drives as they want and there is no pressure. He added that it has given him the opportunity to meet and get to know some inspiring people along the way.

‘It’s unbelievable how positive most of these patients are,’ he said.

‘For the most part they’ll be in high spirits and they are always very appreciative for what you’re doing. There’s a sociable element to the whole thing and you get to meet some great characters. The overwhelming thing though, is that they are so positive. You’d thank your lucky stars that you are in good health and are able to volunteer to help out.’

While drivers are paid a contribution towards their fuel, tolls and refreshments during the day, Arthur says that he just counts it as his donation to the cause.

For the most part, drivers will only be asked to do one or two drives per month, but there is no obligation. Arthur says he would recommend getting involved to anyone.

‘I’d definitely recommend it,’ he said. ‘You can do as much or as little as you want. It’s completely up to you. There’s nothing to be concerned about and you get to meet some wonderful people.’

Those who would like to volunteer as a driver can contact the Volunteer Driver Service team on 01 2310522, email transport@irishcancer.ie or visit www.cancer. ie. Similarly, those undergoing treatment who wish to avail of the service can get in touch by the same means.
