1798 memorial stone unveiled at Rossminogue

- By SARA GAHAN

THE hot sun shined down on the many people who gathered for the unveiling of the 1798 Memorial Stone to commemorate those buried in Rossminogue Graveyard.

Two pipers lead the Craanford Monaseed Pikemen, who were followed by children from the Monageer re-enactment group. Silence hung as they marched together towards the graveyard.

Local councillor Fionntán Ó Suilleabháin gave a moving speech and spoke of the history of the 1798 rebellion that happened around the area, before unveiling the beautiful plaque that read ‘In remembrance of those who fought bravely for freedom and justice in 1798 and who now lie here. May they rest in peace.’

The stone was then blessed by Fr Richard Lawless, while local musician Dessie Doyle said a wonderful song entitled ‘Monaseed on a Summers Morning’.

The ceremony was then followed by Mass which was con-celebrated by Fr Lawless, Fr Felix Byrne, Fr Tom Doyle and Fr Donal Berney.

Afterwards, everyone gathered in the old house for some colcannon, tea, coffee, sandwiches, and minerals. The night continued late into the night with old yarns and stories told by the locals.

The evening was organised by Martin Whelan who keeps the history alive in Craanford. He would like to thank the local neighbours and family for their help in preparing for the event, Peter Kavanagh for the beautiful job done on the monument and Paddy Kavanagh for lifting the stone into place.
