Gary Furlong finds his voice

THE WEXFORD voice actor Gary Furlong has won a prestigiou­s Audiobook Award which was decided on by audibook listeners in a worldwide vote.

‘As You Wish’, a romance thriller by Isobel Starling, narrated by Gary, pictured right, was one of five finalists in the fiercely competitiv­e romance category. The award winners were announced recently at the Hear Now Festival in Kansas and ‘As You Wish’ won the Romance Award.

Gary grew up in Wexford and has worked as a teacher in Japan, a puppeteer in Prague, an improv artist in Memphis, Tennessee and as a singer and actor all over Ireland. He began narrating audiobooks in late 2015 and hasn’t looked back since.

Having made his debut in the musical Godspell as a student in St. Peter’s College, he pursued acting on the amateur and profession­al circuit. He played Tom Collins in Wexford theatre company Bare Cheek’s production of Rent in 2010 and was a member of the Wexford comedy group Taming of the Crewm, appearing in Hellbound,Santa Claus Versus the Martians and Lost and Found.

During five years in Japan, he was an actor, director and audio producer and discovered his interest in audiobooks and voice over. He now works full-time as an audio book narrator and voice actor. He has recorded almost 50 audiobooks and has worked with many top publishers in the industry including Tantor, HarperColl­ins, Audible Studios, Harlequin Audio and Simon and Schuster.He currently lives in Denton, Texas.

He speaks Japanese and Irish and his list of accomplish­ed accents includes Cork Donegal, Dublin, French, Scottish, Cockney, Northern Working Class, West Country, Australian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Scandanavi­an, Indian, Russian, Southern American, Standard American and Serbian.
