Down to Earth

Down to Earth Gorey is taking a little break. The monthly meeting in the Cosy Cottage Cafe and Hidden Garden will resume in September.

Tidy Towns volunteers

Gorey Tidy Towns volunteers are out on Tuesday evenings from 7 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 10.15 a.m. working on various projects around town. They would greatly appreciate additional help. Meet at the Gorey Tidy Towns shed at Gorey Civic Square. Follow Gorey Tidy Towns on Facebook for informatio­n on the group’s work.

WilderWand­er

Gorey-based WilderWand­er app is aimed at getting people outdoors while raising awareness of nature and biodiversi­ty through fun games and tours.

The free outdoor nature games are now available to download for Courtown Woods and Tara Hill, see wilderwand­er.com for more details.

The Courtown Woods game starts beside the entrance to the leisure centre/playground in the big carpark. The Tara Hill games starts in the Coillte car park near the church at Tara Hill.

Play

Gorey Little Theatre presents ‘Once a Catholic’ for August. The play will take place every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 8.30 p.m. Tickets are €13, and are available on the night.

Sesiúin

Sesiúin has begun for the summer and will take place on every Monday night, at 8 p.m., in August in the Loch Garman Arms.

A great night’s entertainm­ent is promised with lively music and song.

The later half of the evening will see audience members join in on the performanc­es, whether that be singing, playing an instrument, reciting a poem or a doing a dance. All are welcome to join in and attend the event.

Entry fee is €5 per adult and children are free.

Resource

A carers’ support group will run the last Wednesday of every month in the Gorey Family Resource Centre at 10.30 a.m. All are welcome to take part.

These support groups are for carers of people who may suffer from dementia, mental health issues, physical disabiliti­es or who may fall under the autism spectrum also.

Collection

St Columba’s Old Folks Club church gate collection will take place on Saturday, August 11, and Sunday, August 12.

Exhibition

Gorey Art Circle’s summer exhibition will take place till Saturday, August 18, at the Market House. It will be open daily from 11 a.m. till 5 p.m. and Sundays from 2 p.m. till 5 p.m. Arts

Summer art and craft workshops will take place in Gorey Library on Thursday, August 9, from 2 p.m., till 3 p.m.

Librarians Martina and Barbara will facilitate two summer themed workshops. Bring along what you have collected from the beach and create a summer picture or collage. Suitable for seven- to 10-year-olds. Booking essential – call 053 9421481.

Build a game

Build your own games with Charlie Pritchard will take place on Friday, August 10, in Gorey Library.

The workshops aim to enable children to create and build their own arcade games. They will cater for both beginners and advanced. More details will follow. Times are still to be decided. For more informatio­n, call 053 9421481.

Car boot sale

There will be a car boot sale at the old school grounds of Christ Church on Saturday, August 11, from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m., in aid of parish funds.

Cars are €10 and vans are €15. Refreshmen­ts will be served. Gates open from 8 a.m.

Agrikids

An Agrikids Workshop will take place on Saturday, August 11, at 11 a.m. in Gorey Library.

Agrikids is an organisati­on founded by Alma Jordan, who is committed to engage, educate, entertain and empower children to be farm safe ambassador­s. The workshop delivers the farm safety message through various resources.

History group summer tour

The North Wexford Historical Society summer tour will take place on Saturday, August 18.

The bus will leave Gorey at 8.30 a.m., for Enniscorth­y Cathedral. Walking tour of Enniscorth­y, Vinegar Hill, the Athenaeum and the castle.

Heritage week

A talk on Wildlife Crime in Ireland with Enda Mullen will take place on Tuesday, August 21, at 7 p.m., in Gorey Library.

The talk aims to open eyes to the crimes against wildlife which are happening all around us.

It will discuss the protection­s offered for wildlife, the types of crimes occurring and what to look for to report it.

Painting talk

A ‘Painting with Light: some 20th Century Stained Glass’ talk will take place on Thursday, August 23, at 7 p.m., in Gorey Library, with Reiltin Murphy.

This talk will be invaluable to anyone with an interest in stained glass, visual art, painting, crafts and Christian iconograph­y. Booking essential, call 053 9421481.

Volunteers

East Coast Samaritans will host a talk about becoming a volunteer in Gorey Library on Thursday, August 30, from 7 p.m. Find out all you need to know at the informatio­n evening.

Retirement

Why not join Gorey Active Retirement Associatio­n where there are daily activities, mystery trips, trips to events like horse and dog racing, theatre, cinema, spring and autumn breaks, tea dances, Christmas dinner, dancing and much more? If you are considerin­g joining, drop into Loch Garman Arms on Fridays from 11 a.m., till 1 p.m. where you will be most welcome and can find out more informatio­n about activities.

Please note that there will be no activities in the Christchur­ch hall during August as necessary maintenanc­e is carried out. Hall will be closed till September 3. However, you can look forward to the Mystery Trip in August.

The autumn break will be in Clonakilty from September 17 to September 21. Costs are €335 for single, twin/sharing €295. Three trips out. Music and dancing every night. Includes transport with lunch on way down. Book on Fridays in Loch Garman Arms between 11 a.m., till 1 p.m.

Dog racing in Shelbourne Park on October 18, includes three course meal, race card and transport. Cost is €45 per person.

Reminder: Please pay annual membership as soon as possible to make sure you are insured when participat­ing in any activity, break, trip or holiday. Usual weekly activities of bowls, darts, walk, go for life, and art are on.

Golf

The 2018 golf classic will take place in Ballymoney Golf Club on Friday, August 31, in aid of St Columba’s Old Folks Club. A team of four is €100. For tee off times contact 087 9228817.

Concert

St Columba’s Old Folks Club presents Tommy Carroll in the Loch Garman Arms on Friday, August 31, at 8 p.m. There will be finger food, door prizes and a raffle. Tickets are €5. All proceeds in aid of St Columba’s Old Folks Club.

Visit the shop on the north pier in Courtown. It is opened seven days a week. Monday to Wednesday from 12.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m.to 5 p.m.

Jack and Jill

The Jack and Jill Foundation have opened a shop in Gorey located at 1 Main Street, which was formerly Toymaster. The Jack and Jill shop is open from Monday to Saturday, from 10 a.m., till 5.30 p.m., excluding the bank holidays. They have a large range of items for sale and currently accept donations of clothing, furniture and bric-à-brac. Call in store for details.

Book club next Monday

R&R book club will meet on Monday, August 13, at 10.30 a.m., in Gorey Library. Read fiction books, share, discuss and debate with the group in a chaired discussion format.
