The great run of our Barton Cup side came to an end as we were beaten by a very good Baltinglass side on a 4/1 scoreline. We had a magnificent run throughout the competition, winning five matches, but were just not good enough on the day.

The club would like to thank all of the players and managers who gave up their time over the last four months, and perhaps next year will see us finally making the breakthrough.

The South Leinster side were beaten by Wicklow on a 5/2 scoreline in the last eight of the competition. With four away matches it was always going to be a struggle to get a result from this one. Again, thanks to players and managers who gave up their time.

Split The Pot was won by Ned Conway who collected €107. The next draw is on August 7 after the presentation.

This Tuesday’s fourball is sponsored by members Seán Murphy, Robert Dwyer and Pat Whelan.

This week we have the club classic sponsored by Culcita Garden Furniture. The format is a team of four with two to score on each hole with all players to count on each of the par threes and last hole.

This is our main fundraiser this year and all proceeds will go towards course sanding in September, removal of tree stumps, and essential work on the sewerage system.

The draw has been done for the club matchplay. The sheet is in the upstairs bathroom and the first round has to be played by Tuesday, August 21.

Ladies, I would like to thank you all for supporting the presentation on Wednesday for our Pink Day, and for dressing up in pink again for the occasion.

Miriam Hand, Marketing Executive of the Breast Cancer Research Institute, and Mary McKenna, Golf Ambassador for Breast Cancer Research, were so appreciative with the turn-out and with the monies raised. Our cheque total raised was €4,290.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in Ireland and early detection and diagnosis is the key to survival. Let us continue to support this great cause.

Congratulations to our Revive Active team, managed by Eileen Cullinan, who had a fantastic win against East Cork on Thursday and are now through to the finals in Ballybunion on September 10. ‘United we play, united we win.’

We are still also in the semi-final of the Boyne Trophy, managed by Anne Healy, which will take place on Monday, August 27, so there’s loads of time to get more practice in girls.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

On a busy week, our first stop was at the picturesque Faithlegg Golf Club situated on the Waterford Estuary. We received a warm welcome from the C.E.O. of the club, Karl Cullen, who, despite having another engagement, waited to greet our group before commencing play.

On a rather pleasant day at the end of July, although a wee bit breezy, the ten teams really enjoyed themselves on a course in splendid condition, none more so than the winning combination of our popular champagne scramble, Tommy Liston (7), Michael Gannon (18), Tony Sexton (21) and Les Jastrebski (25).

They brought in a terrific score of 101 points to emerge clear winners with a bit to spare. Second on 94 points came Willie Byrne (16), Mikey Lee (19), Michael Brennan (20) and Aidan Wallace (27), whilst third on the same score (94 points) were a three-person team comprised of Tom Tyler (15), Francis Coghlan (16) and Martin Forristal (20).

Filling the fourth spot with 93 points were Denis Kirwan (12), Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan (17), Willie Naddy (20) and Jamesie Murphy (24), and the fifth prize went to John Kennedy (16), John Joe Murray (21), Pat Butler (24) and Martin Burke (26) with 92 points.

Back on home soil on Thursday on another breezy day, we had drama galore with the team filling the number one spot being disqualified for a breach of the rules.

It was the unlucky 13th hole that proved their undoing as the banker failed to record the correct score- or as some wag put it, ‘he failed to balance the books’. It wasn’t finished there either as it took a countback over the last nine holes before we could find the winners.

By virtue of a better back nine (48/46), Tony Harford (13), Larry Shannon (20), Mick Long (21) and Tom Kent (26) took the honours with 98 points.

Placed second on the same score were Kevin Treacy (18), Patsy Farrell (20), Les Jastrebski (25) and Martin Burke (26). The third spot went to John Fitzpatrick (19), Dan Quigley (20), Robert O’Dwyer (21) and Colin Casey (22).

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Michael Gannon on the ninth hole and Mikey Lee on the eleventh. On the board for August are Willie Naddy, John Murphy and Brian Dolan.

Next Thursday sees the running of the club classic, and our next outing is at Dungarvan Golf Club on Monday, August 13.

These are the teams and tee-times which must be strictly adhered to: 10.30 a.m., John Browne, Michael Brennan, Pat Traynor, Tom Kent; 10.38 a.m., Denis Kirwan, Billy Redmond, Larry Shannon, Jamesie Murphy; 10.46 a.m., John Kennedy, Michael Gannon, John Joe Murray, Donie Cody; 10.54 a.m., Ray Shannon, Tony Sexton, Les Jastrebski, Martin Burke; 11.02 a.m., Andy Ronan, Willie Naddy, Jim Kehoe, A.N.
