GLYNN-BARNTOWN BLACKWATER 1-9 0-9

GLYNN-BARNTOWN overcame Blackwater by three points in the Enniscorthy Farm Systems Junior football championship Group B game in Oylegate on Sunday.

In a low-scoring game where defences were on top, the Killurin-based side ran out winners despite playing much of the second period with 14 men.

The early exchanges gave spectators an idea of the type of game they were in for, and after ten minutes Glynn-Barntown were ahead by 0-1 to nil thanks to a free from Jack Brazzill.

All the action was taking place around the middle third, and any time either team got close to goal the shooting was poor.

With ten minutes to go in the opening half, Blackwater began to find their range and hit three points on the trot, with the pick of them coming from midfielder Denis Carroll.

Glynn-Barntown replied with scores from Cormac Cooney and a booming Darragh Nolan effort, but at the break Blackwater were ahead by 0-5 to 0-4.

The second-half began with Blackwater’s Conor Sutton hitting a fine brace, but the tetchy nature of the game continued with scores few and far between.

The tie looked to have swung in Blackwater’s favour when Glynn-Barntown’s Darragh Nolan was shown a red card for a high tackle ten minutes into the second period.

Down to 14 men and trailing by three points, Glynn-Barntown rallied and dominated the remainder of the game.

The accurate free-taking of Aaron Kehoe closed the gap, and they got a vital goal with five minutes to play when Ian Moran punched a dropping ball to the net.

Another Kehoe free left Glynn-Barntown three-point win- ners in this Wexford District clash.

They probably deserved the win since they did not concede a score from play after going down to 14 men, but neither side was overly impressive in a game which will not live long in the memory.
