ROSE OF TRALEE ESCORT

Congatualtions and best wishes to John Somers Killincooley, who has been selected as a Rose of Tralee Escort in the 59th Internatiional Rose of Tralee Festival in August. This is a great achievement for John and his family.

It is indeed an honour to be selected as a Rose Escort. The people of Kilmuckridge are very proud of John’s success as this is the first time ever that our village has had a Rose Escort representative.

After a rigorous interview process John was chosen to proceed to Boot camp in Tralee where he was required to pass a number of endurance tests and team building excercises. All eyes will be on RTÉ one on Monday and Tuesday, August 20, and 21, when the Rose of Tralee will be broadcast live from the Dome. We wish John the very best in his role as Rose Escort from his wide circle of friends.

KILMUCKRIDGE SONG TOURS

Join traditional singers Aileen Lambert and John Furlong in touring sites around Kilmuckridge connected to local traditional songs – with performances along the way. This is a lovely, innovative way to engage with our local traditional song heritage as well as visit places of interest in the locality.

Traditional singer Aileen Lambert and Kilmuckridge Tidy Towns are delighted to announce a new project – traditional song tours of the Kilmuckridge area. The tours will take place over two Sunday afternoons with participants visiting a variety of locations linked with local traditional songs, from old graveyards and coastlines to the old tree which stands alongside the site of champion weight-thrower John Mangan’s home in Ballynahask. A number of old and new traditional songs refer to this local hero and where better to gather, sing and listen to these songs than under the tree which he used to practice his throwing.

The first tour will take place on Sunday, August 26, as part of Heritage Week with the second event happening on Sunday, September 9. The tours will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day and participants are asked to gather at the Londis carpark in Kilmuckridge to arrange carpooling.

Both tours are free and booking is recommended, please contact a member of Kilmuckridge Tidy Towns.

Other singers who will join Aileen and John are Maeve Townsend, Mary O’Brien, Paul Tobin, Rachel Uí Fhaoláin, Colm Brennan and Mick Doyle. Locations to be visited include Tinnaberna, Killincooley, Ballinlow Lane, Ballyvaloo, site of John Mangan’s house in Ballynahask and Carrig Rua.

The recently produced songbook ‘Songs of Kilmuckridge (and beyond...)’ features the songs which are included in the tour. This song book was compiled with the assistance of many local people and traditional singers and edited by Aileen Lambert as part of a project last year entitled the Kilmuckridge Song Project.

This project is supported by the Kilmuckridge Tidy Towns and the Heritage Council as part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
