Hilda hits all the right notes at Fleadh Cheoil

-

It was a joyous occasion for harpist Hilda Browne from Ballintlea, Gorey who won a gold and silver medal at the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann held in Drogheda.

Hilda, daughter of Kevin and Siobhan, won a Gold Medal in 15-18 years accompaniment competition and a Silver Medal in the 15-18 years solo Slow Air.

The 18-year old had the support of many musicians and friends from the county, who were delighted with her victories.

As the standard of music improves beyond all comprehension, especially amongst the younger musicians, it makes it extremely difficult to qualify through the preliminary rounds of the Fleadh Cheoil.

Hilda began her music lessons at a very young age under the guidance of Bunscoil Loreto principal Aileen Kennedy. She progressed and became a part of Ceile Bands, Grupaí Cheoils and joined a group called ‘Spraoi’ with four of her musical friends.

During the summer season, Hilda plays with Gorey/ Ballygarrett branch of Comhaltas and performs weekly with them in the Loch Garman Arms in July and August. She is also requested to take part in the concerts at a weekly musical festival in Kilcar, county Donegal.

Siobhan, Hilda’s mother, said another feature of her busy lifestyle is assisting her cousins in classes of Drama, Music, Song and Dance for the youth of the area.

Hilda’s dream for the future is to continue her music which she enjoys so much.
