DRAMA AS YOUNG GIRL IS AIRLIFTED TO HOSPITAL AFTER FALL
YOUNG GIRL IS RUSHED TO TALLAGHT HOSPITAL WITH HEAD INJURIES AFTER FALLING OFF BIKE, BUT HAS MADE FANTASTIC RECOVERY AND IS BACK HOME
A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD girl from Baile Eoghain was airlifted to Tallaght Hospital after suffering a severe head injury after falling off her bike outside her home on Thursday afternoon.
Grace Murphy’s parents rushed her to the local doctor’s surgery but she fell extremely ill and an ambulance was called. Once the ambulance arrived, they called emergency services to provide a helicopter because they believed they would not make it to the hospital in time.
‘She fell outside of our home at 3.10p.m., and we were airlifted at 5.20p.m.,’ said Lianne, Grace’s mother. ‘When she fell I heard her crying and she was flat on her back and had hit the back of her head.’
Grace became lethargic very quickly but did not lose consciousness. Lianne said she knew something was not right and rushed her to their GP.
‘She could not stand up properly,’ said Lianne. ‘I gave her some medicine but it did not work. When we arrived in the doctors, they rang for an ambulance.’
When the ambulance arrived they treated Grace with a severe head injury and contacted emergency services for a helicopter to airlift her to hospital.
‘She had no cuts or was not bleeding, just had a very bad concussion,’ said Lianne.
A training session in Gorey Town Park and Showgrounds was abruptly cancelled for the army helicopter to land safely just before 5 p.m. The Showground users were told to clear for the ambulance to make it through to the helicopter which was waiting on the pitch.
Grace has since returned home and is reportedly doing fine. She went back to school yesterday (Monday), but can’t take part in any sport for the next two weeks.
Lianne said she would like to thank all the amazing staff in the emergency services for helping Grace and acting so quickly in a scenario of life or death.
