John Lacy makes all the right moves

Gorey man John Lacy made all the right moves at the club championsh­ips of Gorey Chess Club on Monday night.

After four rounds victory went to John, who is a former Irish Chess Internatio­nal Player. He was a very deserving winner with a 100 per cent score of 4/4.

A total of 17 players took part in the popular event over the last month.

The Cathal Kelly Cup, named after club member Cathal who sadly passed away last year, was presented to John by Tadhg Kelly, Cathal’s father and retired principal of Tara Hill National School.

Close behind John in second place was Syd Cassidy from Duncannon who scored 3.5/4. Syd is an experience­d tournament player who won three games and drew his last game with David Remenyik, a 13-year old Irish Youth Internatio­nal player.

Gorey Chess Club trainer Manuel Gardenes and chairperso­n Seamus Halpenny both secured third place with a score of 3/4.

Thanks were extended to Michael Gleason of Loch Garman Arms for making the hall available to the club and accommodat­ing the club’s meetings every Monday night. Thanks were also give to Tadhg for his support and to the players who participat­ed in the event.

Gorey Chess Club meet every Monday night from 8 p.m., in the Loch Garman Arms.

Players of all abilities, including beginners, are most welcome.
