COURTOWN

Due to a lot of works which are under way at present, we were not able to hold our normal open singles competition on Wednesday as the back nine holes were closed for the annual hollow coring.

We were, however, able to play the front nine and held a nine-hole sweep. There is still drainage work taking place on holes twelve and 17. This is important work to make the whole course playable during the winter months.

We send our congratulations to one of our younger members, Ross Steedman, who won the golfer of the year prize last weekend.

As usual, there was to be no runaway winner of this prize, and Ross pipped our Captain’s prize winner, Paul Kavanagh, by only one point in the end.

There will be a presentation of prizes this Friday at 8 p.m. to the matchplay winners, the golfer of the year, and to a few who were good enough golfers to score a holein-one during the year.

Gents’ singles medal sponsored by Doyle Associates, Sunday, September 9 (122 played; C.S.S. 75): 1, Martin Griffiths (13), 71; 2, Martin Byrne (19), 73 (last nine); 3, Tony Kinsella (15), 73; gross, Alan McDonald (1), 75; ladies: 1, Pat Kinsella, 34 points (countback).

The weekend competition will be a ladies’ and gents’ singles hamper.

ENNISCORTHY LADIES

Next Friday, September 21, another team of ladies are playing for the Borris Trophy.

A new group of the ladies’ ‘Get Into Golf’ programme has just got under way, and shortly we will see new faces on our fairways.

Our Barton Shield team played Tullamore in Mount Wolseley with a place in the afternoon’s Leinster semi-final up for grabs.

The team of Graham Donohoe, Dayle Donohoe, Jason Rackard and Paul Conroy did us all proud by advancing to the Leinster final where they came up against a very strong Dundalk team who proved too good, but to be able to say our top four golfers could only be stopped by one team in Leinster is something to be proud of.

Second out of 96 Leinster entries is no mean achievement. Well done lads!

In the Senior Cup, the Leinster finals weekend was in Mount Juliet Golf Club on August 24 and 25. We played against a hotly-fancied Carton House with a place in the afternoon’s semi-final up for grabs.

The team of Jason Rackard, Dayle Donohoe, Graham Donohoe, Paul Conroy and Nigel Cullen played some fantastic golf which saw us progress by three games to two, with Paul, Jason and Graham getting the wins.

We came up against Portmarnock in the semi-final and unfortunately came out second best to the eventual Leinster champions.

For a club with our resources to get to final of Barton Shield and to the semi-final of Senior Cup in the same season is a fantastic achievement, and all credit must go to the players involved.

Apologies for the lateness of this one as I mislaid my notes. Captain Tim Morrissey’s prize day was held on the last weekend of June.

After the 18-hole part of the competition the top ten were: Garrett O’Gorman 67; Brian Sinnott 67; Pat Mulvey 67; Thomas Kielthy 68; Liam Sheridan 68; James Sheridan 69; Keith Donnelly 69; Conor Flynn 69; Mick Coffey 69, and Brian Mullarkey 70.

But all to no avail as out of the chasing pack came Anthony Byrne with a 70 plus a 31.5 from the nine-hole play-off to win by 1.5 points.

Top five standings in the gents’ golfer of the year with one event remaining: 1, Liam Sheridan, 128; 2, John Colclough, 104; 3, Paul Lynch, 96; 4, Graham Donohoe, 92; 5, Adam Jordan, 91.

The semi-finals of the club singles were completed recently where David Morton and Martin Sludds and Rory McCauley and Michael Murphy battled it out, with the latter winning in each case.

The final was a major achievement for Martin Sludds who has tried for over 20 years to win this title.

To say he was excited on this victory would be an understatement.

The semi-finals of the fourball were completed recently where Shane Fortune and Eddie Doyle played Joe Delaney and Philip Browne, and Barry Bolger and Con Fleming played David Mahon and Jim Doran in the other, with the former in each pairing winning through to the final.

Congratuations to Barry Bolger and Con Fleming on being victorious in the final played on Sunday.

We are at the quarter-final stage of the mixed foursomes. Louise Roe and Liam Dunbar are in the semi-final after beating the pairing of Marie Dunphy and John Buckley.

The only other known quarter-finalists are Ann Bernie and Philip Browne who will play Maeve McCauley and Alan Jacob.

Some round two matches still have to be played to determine the remaining quarter-finalists.
