Tee up for Rory’s classic in aid of Mellon Educate

- ANNA HAYES

THERE ARE still a few tee times left for this Friday’s Golf Classic at St Helen’s Bay Golf Resort in aid of the Niall Mellon Township Trust.

Starting from 8 a.m. and running until 4 p.m. golfers can compete for the best round, as well as the longest drive on the 13th hold and the closest to the pin on the seventh. Teams of four cost €200. Tee and green sponsorship is also available for €100.

The event is being organised by Wexford senior hurling star Rory O’Connor who will be travelling to Cape Town, South Africa in November to volunteer on the Mellon Educate ’Building Blitz’. Before going however, Rory must raise a minimum of €4,500 for the charity.

The second year business student in DCU has never done anything like this before but said the opportunity was one he didn’t want to pass up.

‘A friend of mine was going this year with his dad, who’s gone out for the past ten years, and he asked me if I wanted to go. It suits my calendar because there’ll be no GAA and I think it’ll be a real eye-opening experience.’

He said he had spoken to others who had volunteered on this and smilar programmes and they had described the unbelievable poverty, where 20 cent would be seen as a massive tip.

The St Martin’s hurler will fly into Cape Town with the other volunteers and they will stay in a hostel about 20 minutes from the building site they’ll be working on. From there, he’ ll be paired off with a tradesman on the site and assist them in the various works.

‘I’m looking forward to it; it will be a great experience.’

Rory is hoping that the Golf Classic will be a big earner for the charity and he said that the uptake on tee times had been very good. He also expressed his gratitude to his two main sponsors Trinity Motors and Brian Walsh Hurleys for their support. To sign up for the event, contact Rory on 085 177 2745.
