GAA CLUB NOTES

Some big games this weekend. On Saturday our under-13 hurlers play Glynn-Barntown in the Division One Shield Final in Farmleigh at 12.30. Then on Sunday the Minor Premier Hurling County semi-final v Faythe Harriers at 11 a.m. in Taghmon. The lads are 60 minutes away from a possible first ever county premier final so they are looking for as much support as possible. Put both the games in your diary.

The next lotto draw takes place on Monday, No winner of recent draw. Next jackpot €9,200. Lucky-dip winners were Owen Lacey (Snr), Seán Ormonde, Richie Curran, Erika Rath, Grace Dunne (Castlebridge) and seller’s prize Nancy Hamilton.

The intermediate hurlers pulled off a great escape when they defeated Monageer-Boolavogue in the final round of the championship coupled with Rathgarogue-Cushinstown victory sees the lads finish fifth and avoid the dreaded relegation. It was Monageer, who started the better and lead by five points to two with 13 minutes gone but for the next 17 minutes our lads were unbelievable, bringing a intensity that we have only seen in bits in the previous four games by outscoring Monageer 1-10 to 0-01. The goal came from a strong Diarmuid Murphy run, beating his man and once Lar Lacey’s defender rushed at him, Diarmuid popped it over his head to the wily Lar Lacey, who unmarked, had nothing to do but drive the ball low to the net.

Facing into a strong wind. the lads brought back a sweeper to hold onto the precious lead and keep Monageer at bay which they managed to do. Monageer only started to get close in the final few minutes but the lads hung on to get the victory needed.

The under-13 footballers played out an epic encounter with Buffers Alley in the shield football final. The lads had an early lead thanks to a goal from Aidan Malanowski but the Alley scored 1-2 without reply just before half time. The second half was tight with the game going to extra time. We lead again the and were two points ahead going into over time before Alley goaled again. We went up the field won two precious frees and Adam O’Connor put one over to level the game on the final whistle. No date yet for the replay.

Well done to the under-9 hurlers who won the Tom Daly Shield Tournament in a Monageer-Boolavogue recently. A great day’s hurling with some powerful displays by all the boys involved. pace. The bus returns at 2.00 PM to Glenbrien Oldschool house for some refreshments. All are welcome, please phone 087 9405268 to notify for a seat on the bus and to enable calculate the numbers for refreshments.
