Askamore to reduce their waste through apple pressing

-

The community of Askamore have the opportunity to produce freshly pressed apple juice, aimed to encourage waste reduction.

The Askamore Community Council, a development group with 16 active members, applied for funding through Wexford County Council Environment section to pay for an apple press and crusher.

The Tidy Towns/Community Garden group, which is under the Council, has worked hard in the garden of Le Chéile Park to recycle and reduce waste as much as possible.

The equipment arrived last week after the grant arrived and the Askamore Community Council gathered all interested for an initial night where they were given a demonstration of the whole process.

‘People also brought a small number of apples each to actually press,’ said member Mary Cunningham.

Jim Lancaster, who is originally from the locality, demonstrated to a large audience in Askamore Hall as to how press apples and preserve apple juice of the best quality. He also talked about how to make cider and left information on producing apple cider vinegar from the cider produced.

Jim’s demonstration was funded under a further Wexford County Council grant application.

The Askamore Community Council now intend to advertise the equipment’s availability for further nights to help people comeanduseitatatimesuitabletothem.

This should ensure that a large number of apples will not go to waste locally this year.
