FAMILY and friends gathered at St Senan’s Church recently to bid a fond farewell to Kathleen Quirke (née Roddis) of Gimont Avenue and formerly of Vinegar Hill Villas. Kathleen sadly passed away at her home on September 5 surrounded by loved ones at the age of 77.

Originally from Sheffield in the UK, Kathleen married the love of her life Tom when at 19 and the pair enjoyed some wonderful times together. A tailor by trade, Kathleen opted to leave the UK at 25 and move to Tom’s hometown of Enniscorthy where they put down some roots of their own.

She was a woman who was utterly devoted to her family and she and Tom together raised children Tom, Brigid, Myles, Liz, Mary, Joan the late Kathleen and step-daughter Maria. Kathleen was also cared for and loved by her son in law Hassan who she affectionately called her son. As well as being a devoted mother, Kathleen was a doting grandmother to Ethan, Ellie, Kelvin, Audie, Kelly and her many other grandchildren.

In many ways, family defined Kathleen and she was described by her daughter Joan as ‘a loving and caring mother to all her children, always putting them first’ and she was always a friendly ear and a shoulder to cry on.

Kathleen always seemed to have a smile on her face and took great joy in the little things. She and her best friend Daphne Murphy were inseparable and could often be seen heading off to the bingo together. The pair also shared a great love of knitting and baking and Kathleen was known for her excellent work in Aran knitting. She also enjoyed days out as a member of the British Legion.

In recent years, Kathleen loved to get away to a bit of sunshine and she enjoyed holidays to Lanzarote with her daughter Joan and grandson Ethan.

Following a moving funeral mass, Kathleen was laid to rest in St Mary’s Cemetery in Enniscorthy. She is sadly missed by her family, including her two brothers Ken and David, and a large circle of friends. May she rest in peace.
