Jim and Kathleen mark 50th anniversary with fundraiser

-

More than €600 has been raised for Spina bifida County Wexford branch through Jim and Kathleen Mulhall’s 50th golden wedding anniversary.

The couple, who live in Knockina, held a Mass celebrated by Fr Colm Murphy in a marquee at their home and afterwards enjoyed a party with close family and friends.

Kathleen (née Power), who is originally from Wexford town, met Jim in 1964 in Wexford Parish Hall at the Royal Showband. Jim, who lived in The Rock, was around the area working as a machine operator. Kathleen worked in Clovermeats until she was 20 years old, she left once she got married.

Jim, who was 26 years of age at the time, and Kathleen, who was 20, got married, four years after they met, on August 24, 1968, in the Church of the Assumption on Bride Street, Wexford town. Monsignor Matt Kelly, Kathleen’s uncle, married them.

After, the couple moved to Gorey and lived in a two-bed flat on The Avenue. When their first child was born, Caroline, they bought a site at Knockina and lived in a mobile home until the house was complete. Later, they welcomed four more kids – Regina, Mark, Maria and Katriona.

In 1968, Jim partnered with Ned Ryan and worked as a truck driver for two years, this was followed by a job as a machine operator with Power Plant until 1974.

Wexford County Council offered Jim a job as a driver for them. He continued this work until 1986 where he became the County Dog Warden until retirement age.

Kathleen said the 50th wedding anniversary was a great night and both are very thankful to everyone, especially John Flood for the music, Anne Mulhall for the delicious deserts, and to all who donated or helped in anyway.

They spent a few nights in Mount Wolseley after the party as a gift from family.
