Fun times at diabetic picnic
THE organisers of an anniversary event for a group dedicated to children affected by diabetes have expressed delight at its success.
The ‘Diabetic Picnic’ was held over three days in the St Vincent de Paul Holiday and Training Centre in Carne to celebrate 25 years of the Parents Support Group for Children’s Diabetes Clinic Wexford (PSGCDCW).
Speaking to this newspaper one of the people involved, Deirdre Bowers, highlighted how the group has grown since being founded in 1993.
‘At the picnic event we had 40 kids ranging in age from five to young adults,’ she said.
The children in attendance came from all over the county, however, they had all attended Wexford General Hospital at some time.
‘The aim of the camp is help children with Type 1 diabetes,’ said Ms Bowers.
‘We show them that they can do whatever they want to do and partake in whatever activity they want to as long as they plan ahead and check their bloods,’ she added.
There is always an educational aspect to the activities and this year was no different but it was based around music.
‘It was a fun weekend of music and we had drumming sessions, songwriting and they got to make their own instruments,’ said Ms Bowers.
‘There was a lot of amusement when the adults took part in an orchestra as well which was great fun,’ she added.
