Hogues shine in local derby

Adamstown lose by seven

- ALAN GOFF in Killurin

BALLYHOGUE ADAMSTOWN 1-16 1-9

BALLYHOGUE RAN out deserving seven-point winners over Adamstown in the quarter-final of the Permanent TSB Junior ‘A’ hurling championship in Killurin on Saturday.

A dominant first-half display which left them leading by eight points laid the foundations for the victory.

After a fast start in which Ballyhogue were a point ahead, Adamstown were given a penalty when full-forward John Connors was fouled. He stepped up and calmly dispatched it to the net.

What could have been a setback only served to spur Ballyhogue on as points from Graham Parker and Enda Minogue (two) plus frees from Ronan Minogue put them into a three-point lead after 20 minutes.

Barely a minute later Ballyhogue were gifted a goal when a long-range free from Ronan Minogue was fumbled into the net by an Adamstown defender.

As the referee blew the half-time whistle, Ballyhogue were ahead by 1-8 to 1-0 after holding their opponents scoreless from play in the first period.

With the aid of a slight breeze, Adamstown made a good start to the second-half. Shane Bradley got their first score from play which was immediately followed by a John Connors free.

Every time Adamstown looked like they were going to gain a foothold in the game, Ballyhogue responded, and a Graham Parker point steadied the ship.

The game was beginning to get away from Adamstown and a fine brace from Shane Byrne put eight points between the sides (1-12 to 1-8) with just over ten minutes to play.

The remainder of the game petered out as Adamstown, try as they might, could not bridge the gap.

Ballyhogue ran out easy seven-point winners and are unbeaten so far this year. They advance to a semi-final and look to have more to give as they won the game playing in third gear.
