The presentation for all the September midweeks will be on September 26.

Next week’s sponsor are the bank officials.

Congratulations to Ciara Sharkey, who recently shot a new ladies’ course record. Ciara shot four under par, 70 gross, which was enough to see her take her place on the wall of fame by one shot.

That golden light of a Junior member, Paul Conroy, did it again in Waterford Castle by winning the Munster Boys’ Amateur Championship, in addition to winning the British Schoolboys’ Championship last May.

Hearty congratulations from all in Enniscorthy Golf Club to Paul on his outstanding achievement. As a result, Paul was also called up to the Leinster panel for the Under-18 inter-provincials in Slieve Russell. It’s great to see someone get the rewards all their hard work and talent deserves.

Congratulations to Gordon Radloff on winning the Creane & Creane July monthly medal with a fantastic score of 62 nett. A follow-up victory only days later added up to a seven-shot cut inside a week. Ouch!

Congratulations to James Sheridan on winning Stephen Fitzpatrick’s professional’s prize with a fantastic score of 42 points off the blue tees. Special mention must also be made of Graham Donohoe’s score of 40 points which was good enough for second place.

Graham shot 66 gross which was one shot lower than his current course record of 67. Unfortunately, as this was not a strokes competition, it will not count as a new course record but nonetheless what a brilliant round of golf.

In a recent midweek nine-hole, sponsored by club professional Stephen Fitzpatrick, the overall winner was Michael Wickham (18) who scored an amazing 26 points. Is this another course record? In the same competition, Maurice Nolan scored a hole-in-one on the sixth.

A birdie on the eighth hole was pitched in from 105m in a competition by a person unknown! Modesty prevents me from naming the man, but it was worth five points to him.

Congratulations to Eddie Doyle (the tall one!) on winning Pat Mulvey’s President’s prize with a score of 67 nett off a nine handicap. This is Eddie’s third club ‘major’, having also won the Captain’s prize in 2016 and 2017.

COURTOWN

There has been a slight change to our diary for next weekend. The ladies’ and gents’ turkey singles will take place as advertised on Saturday, but on Sunday we have decided to have an any combination Turkey fourball.

This means that the first round of our Colman Doyle EBS-sponsored winter league will not be played until the following Sunday. This decision was taken to facilitate members who might wish to watch the Ryder Cup.

Although it seems to be a little early to talk about Christmas, some people have the festive dinner sorted already as we had our singles and fourball hamper competitions over the last two weekends, and the scores returned in both competitions deserve a good healthy feed.

Fourball hamper any combination, Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16: 1, Vinny Kavanagh (12), Denise Kavanagh (10), 44 points; 2, Kate Sheehan (21), Eileen Cullen (19), 43 points (last nine); 3, Michael O’Shaughnessy (22), Pat Carthy (16), 43 points (last six); 4, Joe Turner (12), Mike Beetlestone (20), 43 points.

Gents’ open singles, Wednesday, September 19: 1, Cathal O’Donohoe (18), 38 points; 2, Joe Turner (12), 37 points; 3, Des Roche (5), 36 points (last nine); eleven-hole, Tommy Kinsella (18), 20 points.

Ladies’ and gents’ singles, hamper, Saturday and Sunday, September 22 and 23: 1, Seamus Kennelly, 40 points (last nine); 2, Paddy Stamp, 40 points; 3, Owen O’Kelly, 38 points (last nine); 4, Michael Power, 38 points.

COURTOWN LADIES

Tuesday, September 18, brought the rescheduled two-person team competition sponsored by Lloyd’s Pharmacy.

This competition was called off due to weather conditions earlier in the year - can you believe that given the fantastic summer we’ve had?

Marie Noctor of Lloyd’s was in attendance on Tuesday evening to present the teriffic prizes. We are yet again indebted to Marie and Lloyd’s for their generous sponsorship.

Results: 1, Catherine Ledwidge (14) and Eileen Moriarty (25), 49 points; 2, Mary Cooper (30) and Ann Bernie (18), 47 points; 3, Mary Osborne (20) and Kate Sheehan (21), 45 points (countback); 4, Patty Flynn (25) and Eleanor Kelly (34), 45 points; nine-hole competition: 1, Mary O’Connor (35), 18 points; 2, Ann O’Shaughnessy (37), 17 points. Congratulations to all our winners.

Friday, September 21, saw Ann Bernie bring her team to Borris where they were runners-up in the Borris tournament. Well done ladies.

Next Friday will see Laura Funge and the Junior foursomes team play the national semi-finals in Knightsbrook, Trim. Good luck to Laura and team.

Next Tuesday we have a three-person waltz. This is always a fun competition, so get your name down and take part.

ENNISCORTHY LADIES

Last Tuesday’s ladies’ competition was played after a night of heavy rain, but the day opened up to be mild and sunny as it progressed.

The weekly competition was sponsored by Glamour Boutique and Ottivia Boutique and was a fourball better ball.

Results: 1, Margaret Frayne (10), Marie Dunphy (16), 43 points; 2, Jane Whelan (31), Joan Whelan (25), 41 points; 3, Deirdre Kavanagh (18), Jacinta Kenny (18), 40 points; nine-hole qualifier: 1, Rosemary Flynn, 17 points.

After the presentation of prizes, Ottivia Boutique put on a fashion show of their autumn/winter collections. The clothes were modelled by our own ‘in-house’ models and gave us a flavour of what’s on trend for the season ahead. Next week’s is competition sponsored by the club. Some of our ladies played in the Borris Trophy on Friday against Callan but unfortunately it wasn’t their day.

Our ladies’ Seniors competition was postponed due to rain last Thursday and is re-scheduled for Thursday, September 27.

A scramble was organised for our new lady members on Saturday and a great day was had by all.

WEXFORD

The big news last week was the result of the club super draw which was held at a special function in the clubhouse before a large attendance.

Music was provided by Ronnie and Paul Bent. As the winning tickets, which were all for holidays abroad, were being drawn by the Mayor of Wexford, Cllr. Tony Dempsey, theme music from each of the holiday locations was played by Ronnie and Paul, and this very much added to the excitement and to the holiday atmosphere in the clubhouse.

There were nine holidays and a seller’s prize on offer, and the lucky winners were: 1st prize, five-star 14-night full board Mediterranean cruise, Mary Walsh, Knocknasillogue, Blackwater; 2nd prize, 14 nights all-inclusive holiday in Mexico, Bart Zalwert, Churchtown Court, Kilrane; 3rd prize, seven nights all-inclusive at a Mauritius golf resort, John Pierce, Clontarf, Co. Dublin; 4th prize, four-star ski holiday, half-board with ski packs, Catherine Lynn, Coolballow; 5th prize, five nights in a four-star hotel in New York, ‘The Four of Us’, c/o Rita Cleary, Coolcotts; 6th prize, five nights in a four-star hotel in Dubai, Angela Kelly, St. John’s Road; 7th prize, four nights in a four-star hotel in Prague, Mary Hatton, Crossabeg; 8th prize, four nights in a four-star hotel in Rome, Janet Browne, Glynn; 9th prize, four-night four-star trip to Prague, Terry Lyons, Curracloe.

The seller’s prize (free sub)was won by our club President, John Quigley. Well done to the fundraising committee of ‘Patch’ Doyle, Kevin Murphy and Trish Boyd.

Tuesday Seniors, 15-hole singles: 1, Brian Judd (20), 32 points (back seven); 2, Seamus Sills (26), 32 points; 3, Tom Sullivan (19), 31 points.

Tuesday evening semi-open, ten-hole Scotch mixed fourball: 1, Janet Dignan and Kieran Purcell (16), 37; 2, Aisling O’Leary and Paul Harrington (5.3), 37.7; 3, Kathleen and Larry Murphy (16.7), 38.3.

This was the last of this summer’s competitions, and refreshments and music by Paul Bent were provided in the clubhouse to close off the season in style. Well done Kathleen for organising this popular event again this year.

Wednesday ladies’ and gents’ 14-hole open fourball: 1, Joe Moore (9) and Seán Kenny (19), 48 strokes.

Liam Bowler sponsored a team event on the August bank holiday which had a few novel scoring opportunities, and we wondered what other ideashe could come up with. We did not have too long to wait as on Friday, in conjunction with Wexford G.C., we had the first of the ‘Liam Bowler Pro Shop Classics’.

Unlike ‘The Late Late Show’, there was not a prize for everyone in the audience but there was a prize for everyone who did anything noteworthy during the competition.

There were three categories with 13 prizes in each. Given the very heavy rain on Thursday, our course staff were at work early on Friday morning and had the course in first-class condition. There was a very good entry with quite a few visitors.

Results - gents’ Cat. +2 to -13 handicaps: 1, Donal Walsh (6, Portarlington), 39 points; 2, Alan Keeling (10), 38 points; 3, John French (11), 37 points (back nine); gross, Rhys Clarke, 33 points; first nine, Ray Cullinane (12), 20 points (back six); back nine, Jim Turner (6), 19 points; nearest the pin: third hole, Alan Keeling; sixth hole, Danny Kenny; ninth hole, Ray Cullinane; 13th hole, Geoffrey Farrell; 16th hole, Tadhg Foran; nearest the pin in two on the 18th hole, John Byrne; longest drive, Donal Walsh (Portarlington).

As there was no winner of nearest the pin on the 18th, it had been decided that in this event a second nearest the pin on the ninth would be awarded, and this was won by Theresa Kehoe.

To conclude this very busy week, our weekend competition was sponsored by Boland’s Car Sales.

Results: 1, Alan Lawlor (11), 39 points; 2, Peter Corish (20), 38 points (back nine); 3, Jim Cole (24), 38 points; gross, Nicky Reville, 30 points; 4, Bart Zalwert (29), 37 points; vets., Nicky Murphy (11), 37 points.
