Maca to take flight for the USA

- By BRENDAN KEANE

WEXFORD music act Maca will take off for Florida on Tuesday on the next phase of a musical journey that has seen them go from being unknown trad musicians into one of the finest songwriting folk-rock acts that Ireland has ever produced.

Remarkably, the three sister-members, Saoirse, Naoise and Ciara Carty, are all still very young but their inherent talent is blatently obvious to anyone who witnesses them perform live.

The level of their musicianship was acknowledged on national television when they won the TG4 competition, ‘Réalta agust Gaolta’ which saw them go up against some of the country’s foremost musicians and songwriters.

However, Maca’s star began to shine even under their former name, ‘The Carty Sisters’, but having caught the atten- tion of everyone from Kila, Bagatelle, and Aslan to Johnny Logan their ascendancy on the comtemporary Irish music scene has been steady over the last couple of years.

Now they have been offered an opportunity of a lifetime in America where they will be putting in daily performances in a residency at Orlando’s famous Raglan Road venue but that’s all as a forerunner to a calculated stab at breaking the American market with some big hitters within the international music scene helping them behind the scenes. There are also talks of a full-scale stage production based around them being created in the coming year.
