GAA NOTES

Hard luck to the minor hurlers who lost out in the premier semi-final to Harriers by three points. In probably the minors best performance of the year, the lads came up just short against a what must be said was an excellent Faythe Harriers outfit. The lads had star performers all over the field with all of them fighting for every last ball and were in the game all the way up till the end.

We played with the wind in the first half and hit three quick wides in the first few minutes before Pad scored a free. Unfortunately what was the Harriers first attack a long ball in was caught by the corner forward and he ran through to lash it to the net. They pointed quickly after to lead by three but our lads started to grow into the game and we had a goal chance of our own when Mossy was unlucky to knock the ball wide. He pointed a minute later while Pad knocked over a 65 and free to level the game with 16 still left on the clock.

Bryan Mooney did well to catch the next ball to pass to Pad, who scored before Harriers got their first point in 13 minutes to level again. They followed that up to take the lead before our lads scored five points in a row. Pad knocked over two frees before an outstanding Johnny O’Toole run resulted in him getting a score before Mossy and Pad frees had us leading by three with three minutes left. Unfortunately two quick sucker punches had us behind at the break, with the Harriers working two goals. Pad notched over a free to leave us just two behind but facing a stiff wind.

With our lads facing that wind, we had to up our performance again and we did just that as we were level with seven minutes just gone with the ever reliable Pad knocking over frees. Harriers did manage to win a penalty but Adam Cullen was more than up to the task in saving it out for a 65. With Harriers moving three in front, we needed to keep in touching distance and Pad knocked a free over the black spot. What we really needed though was a goal and we got a break. A high ball into the box fumbled around and the goal scorer from the quarter final victory Brian Óg reacted the quickest to pull to the net resulting in a deafaning roar from the massive Blackwater crowd. Our tails were up and then the score of the day, Ross Berry won the puc out played a brilliant pass to Feidhlim and the captain made a superb run to strike over the bar.

Two points up and we were winning the puc outs and seemed to drive on for the last eight minutes. Unfortunately though yet again, another sucker punch, the Harriers goaled at the right time to put them up by one point. They followed this up with some excellent scores and with only one minute left, Pad won a free which he put over. With time running out, we needed something special and while we did win a free deep into injury time, unfortunately it was too far out for Pad to get the ball to the net, his shot being well saved.

The grand opening of our indoor arena takes place on October 7 at midday with a special guest to open the arena, current Wexford Hurling manager Davy FitGerald. There will be a marquee with refreshments for supporters and well wishers. Make sure and come down to support.
