Pedestrian lights due to be turned on within fortnight
A PROBLEM relating to traffic congestion outside of the national school in Riverchapel could soon be resolved with recently erected pedestrian lights due to be turned on within a fortnight.
Speaking to this newspaper about the lights Cllr Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin said it’s something that has been raised in the Council Chamber on a number of occasions over the last four years.
‘There has always been serious traffic problems there and in recent months a child was knocked down near the school ,’ he said.
At a recent meeting of the local authority Cllr Ó Súilleabháin raised the issue of erecting railings adjacent to the lights.
While that suggestion didn’t receive universal support from within the chamber he said something needs to be done to ensure that adequate safety measures are in place for when the lights are switched on.
‘It’s a big problem and to be fair to the Council they have erected the lights but we do need to have them switched on,’ said Cllr Ó Súilleabhán.
‘There are issues with the parking situation there too,’ he added, while agreeing that parents and drivers have to accept responsibility when they are in close proximity to the school.
‘We need the parents to adhere to guidance from the school,’ he said.
With regard to the lights being switched on he said it’s something that needs to be done as matter of urgency.
‘We need it to be done immediately and hopefully it will be done within the next fortnight,’ he added.
