Noel started his career with the council in 1979

FAMILY and friends gathered together in Bugler Doyle’s pub in Wexford to celebrate the retirement of Noel Hayes from Wexford County Council after a career stretching back to the 1970s.

Mr Hayes began his life with the local authority in 1979 when he took a role in the Housing Department as a plumber.

Always a dedicated member of staff his amiable personalit­y meant he made a lot of friends within the department - many of whom joined him for his retirement party celebratio­n.

He stayed with the Housing section until 2004 when he was promoted to a new position in the Water Services department. He later took over the role of Assistant Town Foreman for Wexford Borough Council before getting promoted to the position of Senior General Services Supervisor for the Enniscorth­y and Gorey districts.

Known all over the county for his work with the local authority Mr Hayes was very respected within the community both in his native Wexford town and throughout the rural parts of Wexford.

Some friends travelled long distances to attend the retirement party.

In 2013 he took over the role of Senior General Services Supervisor for the New Ross and Wexford areas and he remained in that position until his retirement this year.

While working Mr Hayes also continued with his education and studying part-time through Sligo IT he received a BSc in Constructi­on Management and he is also a registered Clerk of Works with the Institute of Building Inspectors.

At his retirement function tributes were paid to him from former work colleagues with many highlighti­ng the fact he was always dedicated to his job and was always willing to give advice and help to his fellow Council workers and staff.

Mr Hayes was joined on the night by his wife Muriel, his son, John, daughters, Grainne and Deirdre, and by his relatives and friends.

A number of presentati­ons were made to him on behalf of the local authority highlighti­ng the high regard in which he is held by everyone who knows him and who worked with him in Wexford County Council.

He thanked everyone for taking the time to celebrate his retirement with him and his family acknowledg­ed how his friends and colleagues made it a very special occasion.
