The annual fourball competition between the Wexford resident members and those non-residents in the county took place on Saturday in cold, sunny and windy conditions. A very competitive and fun event resulted in the Wexford resident members winning in a very tight match.

Rivalries soon abated as the annual dinner dance got under way in the clubhouse on Saturday night. Following delicious food and wine, there was music and dancing until the small hours. It was another great annual social event.

Today’s (Tuesday) competition is 14 holes singles, holes 3-16, as is Tuesday, November 6, on the main course.

Twelve-hole stableford singles (N/C handicap) will be held on the Burrow course on October 30 and November 6.

WEXFORD LADIES

October 20-25, 16-hole stableford sponsored by Viking Glass (64 played): 1, Bernie Power (28), 33 points; 2, Elaine Bolger (43), 31 points (back eight); 3, Ger O’Brien (21), 31 points; gross, Margaret Atkinson (10), 20 points; Senior, Trish Field (27), 27 points; nine-hole, Rose Morris (16), 17 points.

Nearest the pin on the sixth hole was Mary Cashe, 6m 28cm. The nearest the pin will be on the ninth hole for the winter months.

Next week’s competition is a 14-hole single stableford. The first annual left-handed golfers versus right-handed golfers challenge and 3T’s charity fundraiser took place on Saturday. This was a nine-hole matchplay competition with a team of 23 ‘lefties’ taking on 23 right-handed players.

On a bright but very chilly afternoon, the right-handed team, captained by club Captain Jack Lynn, just managed to come out on top with a score of twelve points to eleven points. Great fun was had by all and a good sum was raised for charity.

A reminder that Bridge sessions, open to all, recommence in the club on Wednesday, November 7, and Wednesday, December 5, commencing at 9.45 a.m., and the ladies’ A.G.M. will be held on Monday, November 19, in the clubhouse.

After six days of competition over the past two weeks, we finally have the winners in the 16-hole open singles Festival Cup sponsored by ESET Technology.

The overall winner was Fintan McCleane (16) with his score of 38 points. In second place with 37 points was Jim Keane. Jim had only returned on the previous day from a week of ‘squad training’ in Murcia.

In third place was Anthony Dowd (14) with 35 points (back nine). The gross prize was won by Gary Lynch with 30 points, and the vets. prize was won by Terry Lyons (13) with 32 points.

The daily winners were: October 17, Geoffrey Farrell (9), 35 points (back eight); October 19, Brian Morris (7), 34 points (back six); October 21, Liam Flood (18), 35 points; October 24, George Roche (20), 34 points (back eight); October 26, Tom O’Sullivan (19), 33 points; October 28, Larry O’Neill (8), 33 points (back eight).

The winner of the weekly draw was Gráinne Whelan and, as the jackpot was not won, it will increase to €2,433 for next week.

Competitions next week are: Wednesday, ladies’ and gents’ 14-hole open fourball; Friday, three-person champagne scramble; Saturday, gents’ nine-hole fourball competition.

Also on Saturday we will hold our sponsors’ and the Societies’ day with a nine-hole shotgun start at 12 noon. On Sunday we have a two-person team event with the best score to count on odd holes and both scores to count on the even holes.

We had the first ever left-handed golfers versus the right-handed golfers match in aid of the 3T’s charity (and a few bragging rights for a year by some of the players). Spectators may have thought that previous Ryder Cups and Solheim Cups with professionals might have been exiting, but this proved to be even better.

Jack Lynn was the right-handed team Ryder Cup captain and Martina Gately was the vice-captain and Solheim Cup captain. Nicky Murphy was the left-handed team Ryder Cup captain and Margaret Atkinson was the vice-captain and Solheim Cup captain.

The left-handers, some could say, were really up against it with only approximately 5% of the membership in the club, but that didn’t faze Nicky Murphy and Margaret Atkinson who were both up for the match, so much so that the first four matches were all won by left-handed golfers Elaine Bolger, Elizabeth Kavanagh, Mary Burke and Liam Ruttledge.

Tom Rowe then settled the right-handers with a valuable win over Seamus Thomas. Ciarán Gray increased the lead for the left-handed team to 5-1 with a win over Fred Boyd. Michael Mahoney and Susan Kelly played out a draw and got half a point each.

In the middle of the draw, the right-handed team started to play some solid golf with five wins in a row for Ted Hynes, Joe Cashe, Paul Gaddren, John Cleary and Kieran Purcell.

All of a sudden the right-handed golfers had the lead for the first time. Caroline Creane got the first win in an hour for the left-handed team to level the sides.

Liam Brett, John Quigley, Enda Lambert and Neil Murphy all played out a draw, each player getting a half point each, with John fighting back from two down with two to play. Liam Sinnott and Larry O’Neill had a draw due to an injury prior to tee-off.

The left-handed golfers were on the fight again, getting into a three-point lead with wins from Andy O’Brien, Margaret Atkinson and Nicky Murphy. Once again the right-handed team got back with wins from lady Captain Patricia Hanton and Jim Turner to trail 11-10.

It was down to the final two groups to determine the outcome for this inaugural event and, unbelievably, both matches were all square with one hole to go.

Captain Jack Lynn was three down in his match earlier but, standing over a chip where so many players have failed in the past, he chipped in for a birdie to close out his match.

All of a sudden it was eleven points each. Eamon Hopkins and Jimmy ‘Tiger’ Thomas were left to decide the overall result.

Some people had called this as ‘Phil against Tiger’ and, as it has been Tiger’s year, up he stood to sink a twelve foot putt for par on the final hole to give the right-handed team a great win and the end result 12-11.

With so much excitement the talk is already starting for wild card picks and the Captains for 2019, Margaret Atkinson and Martina Gately, will be studying the form for

NEW ROSS SENIORS

In glorious autumnal weather, we went on our final away outing of the year to the picturesque Faithlegg Golf Club situated on the Waterford Estuary.

After the morning coffee it was out to do battle on the championship course, and many thanks go to Kevin in the Pro Shop for getting us out before our allotted time.

As usual with this Seniors group, there was intense competition and some great scoring. Captain Andy, fresh from his South American cruise and with his new crew including a past Captain from another sporting sphere, seemed to be cruising for victory when they shot 52 points on the outward nine holes.

But on the back nine holes, the homeward voyage, they hit the rocks, got becalmed, then got derailed, ran out of steam, or simply blew up, clocking only 36 points.

So much for the proverb, ‘a good start is half the battle’ - not when you fail to capitalise on it like in this instance.

Meanwhile, a Wexford/Kildare/Kilkenny quartet kept playing consistently good golf right through the 18 holes and in the end ran out clear winners.

Michael Kavanagh (16), Jimmy ‘Ross’ Ryan (17), Michael Brennan (20) and Jamesie Murphy (24) put two nines of 47/46 together to emerge victors with a cracking score of 93 points.

Despite being becalmed on the back nine, Eddie Keher (12), Andy Ronan (14), Jimmy O’Neill (17) and Aidan O’Connor (20) shot 88 points to claim the runners-up position.

Third place went to Mikey Lee (17), Michael Gannon (18), Willie Naddy (20) and Martin Burke (25) with 87 points. A better back nine (43/39) and a final total of 85 points saw Jimmy Furlong (12), Billy Redmond (19), Tony Sexton (22) and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (25) get the fourth prize.

On the same score (85 points) and taking fifth prize were Tony Harford (14), Liam Glasheen (21), Frank Boyle (23), and Les Jastrebski (25).

Back on home turf on Thursday, we had a big turn-out with 13 teams taking part in our weekly outing. A stiff, cool north-westerly breeze but perfect underfoot conditions made for some great scores being recorded.

Even though there were difficult pin placings on all the holes with the flagstick at the back on the majority, some teams made short work of the set-up, producing scores well in advance of the 90 points target figure.

A single point separated the winners from the runners-up, the 96 total of Patsy Farrell (20), Kenny Irwin (21), Tom Furlong (22) and Donie Cody (23) being good enough to claim first prize.

Four teams finished on 95 points and it took a countback to sort them out. The better back nine score (46) of Hughie O’Connor (19), Billy Redmond (19), John Joe Murray (21) and Mick Wade (22) saw that team take the second prize.

It took a better score on the last six holes (31/30) to give Tony Harford (14), John Colfer (18), John F. Roche (21) and Mikey Lee (19) third prize, also with 95 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Willie Byrne on the ninth hole and Dick Cuddihy on the eleventh.

As and from next Thursday, November 1, our new starting time is 11 a.m. sharp, to avoid any possible delays due to overnight frosts which may occur from time to time.

All players should be in house in good time for the draw for teams which is at 10.45 a.m. On the board for November are Willie Kelly, Willie Naddy and John Joe Murray.

The sympathy of all the Senior players go to our colleagues, Pat Kehoe and Martin Hartley, both of whom have recently been bereaved.

Pat’s wife, Noleen, was laid to rest in St. Stephen’s

PAULINE’S SOCIETY

The splendid Macreddin golf course was the venue for our October outing. With a fine turn-out of members and welcome visitors, it proved to be a serious challenge for all concerned.

Once again that young man Colin Fenlon led the field to take first place, followed closely behind by rising star Paddy Delaney, with Mick Butler slotting into third place.

Three nearest to the pin prizes were up for grabs and were won by Mick Butler, Dave Feeney and visitor Nicky Murphy. The visitors’ prize was won by Tom O’Connor. Well done to all concerned.

Mountain View golf course will host our next outing on November 10, with the first tee-off at 9.30 a.m. Those intending to play should note that they should be in attendance at the course by at least 9 a.m. to facilitate the draw, and ensure the smooth running of the order of play.

The usual arrangements regarding names being put on the sheet in Pauline’s Bar will apply, and should be posted by 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7. Once again visitors and intending members will be welcome.

Subscriptions that are overdue should also be paid to the Honorary Treasurer on the day, to ensure that funds will be in place to finance the Christmas prizes. We are looking forward to seeing as many players as possible signing up for this outing.

We are now taking enties for the winter league. For all new members of the club, this is a series of five 14-hole stableford competitions that are run throughout the winter, with two to three before Christmas and the remainder afterwards.

The entry fee is €25 which covers all five, and it should be placed in the men’s competition box with your preferred tee-time and name stated. We will try as far as possible to ensure that members get as close to their preferred teetime, but this may not be possible if too many are opting for the same early times.

For those who have pre-paid, the timesheet will be updated on Sunday, November 4. We are grateful to Hartley’s Autocraft who have come on board to sponsor the winter league.
