SOCCER NEWS
On Sunday, October 21, the ladies’ team won and the Men’s ‘A’ team returned to winning ways. The ladies travelled to Cushinstown and after a great team display, well deserved to win by 2-0. Kate Cullen got both goals and was also the ‘player-of-thegame’.
The ‘A’ team were at home in Luke Foran Park and put five past visitors St Leonards. Brendan Burke scored the first goal, Jack White made it two shortly later and Jamie Dempsey-Doyle curled in a free for the third just before the break. In the second half, Brendan added two more for his hat-trick and was adjudged ‘player-of-the-match’ with Jack White.
The previous day, the Youths, away to Wexford Celtic came away without any points, losing by 0-6. They were 0-4 down at the break and conceeded two more in the second half.
The same day, the under-13s took on Moyne Rangers in Boolavogue and fought back well in the second half of a game in which they trailed 0-2 at the break. Moyne added a third early in the second half but Bobby Codd gave our lads heart with a spectacular goal late in the game.
GAA/CAMOGIE NEWS
Congratulations to Josie Gahan, Tinnacross, who was honoured along with the rest of the 1968 all-Ireland camogie champions at the half-time of the county senior hurling final in Wexford Park recently.
The same day, Sunday, October 21, the under-14 hurlers lost to Ballyhogue in their second game in the Martin Storey Tournament. Fionn Walsh, Ian Rigley and Patrick Kinsella were the star players for our lads.
And the Junior Footballers also lost, 1-8 to 0-13 to Rathgarogue-Cushinstown in the county final. In a closely contested final, our juniors had two points on the board before their opponents clawed one back. But at the interval Cushinstown lead by 0-6 to 0-3 and were 0-8 to 0-6 ahead midway through the second half when Damien Fenlon gave us the lead with a brilliantly worked goal. A long distance free from Cathal Walsh stretched our lead to two points shortly afterwards. Cushinstown turned on the style for the remaining minutes and scored three points without reply to regain the lead. They ran on to win by two points after a thrilling game.
