PRIDE OF PLACE RESULTS

Congratula­tions to Clonegal village who were announced as the overall winner of Carlow’s Pride of Place 2018 Towns and Villages, at a gala event held in Mount Wolseley Hotel Spa and Golf Resort, Tullow, with a large attendance of community activists from, resident/community groups, businesses and schools around the county in attendance.

Before the announceme­nt of the over winner, Clonegal scooped up three other prizes: Winner of the Street Awards, ‘Village and town population up to 250 to 750’ category; ‘Upcycling Challenge Group’ and ‘Burial Grounds not in use’ goes to St Fiaac’s Church of Ireland.

Congratula­tions to Kildavin village on scooping up two awards; first place in the ‘Village and town population up to 250’ category and winner of the ‘Business Award’ goes to Conway’s Pub and Lounge. Well done to all the people of the village and committee members for their hard work throughout the years and especially during the summer months. Without the community’s help and support, this high standard of achievemen­t would not be possible.

KILDAVIN-CLONEGAL GAA

Kildavin-Clonegal GAA wishes to say thanks to the large numbers who participat­ed in their planning night on Friday, October 12. The club feels that the community rallied to demonstrat­e that it was a valued part of it. In the process, which will flow from the evening, the club hopes to deliver as far as practicabl­e on the communitie­s’ expectatio­n. They ask people to stay in touch with the club and keep the feedback coming.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

The Clonegal/Kildavin senior citizens Christmas party will be held in the Ballykeale­y Manor Hotel, Ballon on Sunday, December 9.

HUNTINGTON CASTLE

Huntington Castle Spooky Family Halloween Tour doors are still open today and tomorrow, Wednesday, October 31. Family tours only for under-12s between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. All tickets must be booked through Failte Ireland Tourist Informatio­n Offices. The candlelit tour will last approximat­ely 35 minutes and will run daily. Tickets cost €7.95 for under-12s and €6.95 for adults. Please note: there are no adults and teenager tours this year.

BUNCLODY LIBRARY EVENTS

HISTORY TALK WITH MYLES KAVANAGH: Thursday, October 25, at 7 p.m. ‘The Blackstair­s Mountain, spring mount and Surroundin­gs’ a book by Myles Kavanagh published in May of this year is concerned with the life and times, customs and events of the people under the shadow of the Blackstair­s Mountain Range.

In this talk, Myles will deal with some lesser known and interestin­g people and events of the 19th century of the area. The ‘Bantry Commons Legal Battle’ for free grazing the mysterious disappeara­nce of the skull of Fr Mogue Kearns after his execution in Edenderry and its recovery 155 years afterwards, Cahir Rua and his Mountain Cave, Ballycryst­al House and Lola Montez, Michael T Fenlon and spring mount house and a native who was prohibited from returning to Ireland after serving in the Australian Imperial Forces in France in World War One are among the topics that Myles will cover.
