-

Top honours were given to two Gorey Community School students at this year’s ‘Talbot artist of the Year’ competition run by the Talbot Hotel in Wexford during the Opera Festival.

Second year student Ciara Sharp was presented with first place in the Junior Secondary School category, while Alannah Brennan in fifth year came first in the Senior Secondary School category.

‘We just want to give huge congratulations to the students who won an award,’ said Nuala Moore from Gorey Community School.

Jenny Werner from the Talbot Hotel Wexford said the talent and creativity of all the entries received absolutely blew them away again this year.

The art competition is run in conjunction with Wexford Opera Festival, which attracts a large number of local and oversea visitors each year.

The staff at Gorey Community School would also like to congratulate students Doireann Cullen, who was runner up in the senior section, Theodore Lande, Sinead Breen and Aoife Kavanagh in second year who were finalists in the Junior category and Megan Cullen and Areeya Deenam in fifth year who were also finalists in the senior section.

A special reception was held at the Talbot Hotel recently and general manager of Talbot Hotel Dick Walsh presented the students with their prizes. All winners and runners up received an engraved trophy each along with a selection of art materials from Spectrum Art and Framing Wexford. The artwork from the winners will be framed and kept on display in the hotel.

Mr Walsh said the Wexford Opera Festival is a fantastic way to showcase the talents of the young people.

Now in its fifth year, the ‘Talbot Hotel Artist of the Year competition’ receives entries from primary and secondary school students from around the country.

This year, after hundreds of entries, finalists were chosen in four categories and their artworks were displayed in the Talbot Hotel for the duration of the Wexford Festival Opera.

A spokesperson for the Talbot Hotel said that the entries received fantastic praise from international guests staying in the hotel during festival season.
