CAMOGIE AGM

Monageer-Boolavogue camogie club’s AGM will take place on Friday, December 7, at 8 p.m. in the GAA Complex in Monageer. All parents of the underage players as well as all adult members are urged to attend.

SOCCER NEWS

On Sunday the 11th. the men’s ‘A’ team were away to Moyne Rangers and continued their winning ways with a 4-1 win. Jamie Dempsey-Doyle, Mick Sweeney, James Sweeney and Stephen F Lacey all scored. Brendan ‘Frikki’ Burke and Stephen Lacey were the star players.

The understren­gth ‘B’ team were also playing away from home but they lost their game to Wexford Bohemians by 1-5. Ray O’Brien was the goal scorer for them.

The ladies’ team also took on Wexford Bohs in their game, played at home in Luke Foran Park. After the poor first half, they were 0-1 down. Rachael Breen brought them level early in the second half with a spectacula­r header but Bohs pulled ahead again, converting a dubious penalty. Then, with less than 10 minutes left, Aoife Walsh connected powerfully on a corner to rattle the net for a share of the points.

Once again all underage fixtures were postponed on Saturday the 10th. due to the wet weather. The under-14 girls had been due to take on Ballindagg­in at home, the under-10s were also at home to Bunclody, the under-12s were away to Courtown Hibs and the under-16s had been scheduled to host Moyne Rangers.

GAA/CAMOGIE NEWS

In the Martin Storey Tournament, the under-14 hurlers have qualified for the quarter finals. They played St Mary’s in Rosslare on Sunday the 11th. And lead by four points after a strong first half performanc­e. St Mary’s put on a very strong second half display and ran out worthy winners in the end.

GAA LOTTO

Tuesday the 13th. was a lucky night for Aidan Behan as he collected the €160 match-three prize in the Monageer-Boolavogue GAA lotto draw. The numbers drawn on the night were 5, 9, 27 and 30 and if he had had all four he could have scooped the jackpot. As this was not won it has been increased to €5,300 for the next draw which will take place on Tuesday the 27th. at 9.30 in the New Clubhouse in Monageer.

MINISTERS OF THE WORD

The Minister of the Word at the 8 p.m. Vigil Mass on Saturday, November 24, is Rosaleen Gahan with Georgina Gahan helping distribute Holy Communion. At the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday the 25th., the reader on duty is Ann O’Sullivan with Dorothy Hall acting as Eucharisti­c Minister.

COLÁISTE AN ÁTHA

Coláiste an Átha will hold their Enrolment Evening for students entering first year in September 2019 tonight, Tuesday, November 20, from 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Please contact the college if you have any questions or queries about enrolling your child. Thomas Furlong on November 1, 1871. On that day, one reporter commented the church was crowded to inconvenie­nce. Hence our church will be 150 years in used as a place of worship on November 1, 2021. that in three years from now. We will no doubt celebrate this important parish occasion in some appropriat­e manner.

It is likely that the anniversar­y may be marked by the production of a book, just as we did for the centenary of Monageer School in 2014. Monageer Past and Present was a fine and interestin­g vbolume produced in 2013 abourt parish life then and now. By the way the big word for a 150th anniversar­y is sesquicent­enary, a word which means ‘a centenary more by one half’.

TIDY TOWNS

Congratula­tions and well done to Liam Nolan and Anne Marie Power being presented with the Tidy Towns Award by Michael Ring, Minister for Rural and Community Developmen­t recently in Ferrycarri­g Hotel on behalf of Grotto and Tidy Towns committee.

WELL DONE

Well done to Edward Kinsella, who recently achieved a Gold Medal in the Pope John Paul II Awards.

The local community first responder group are having a fundraisin­g table quiz in the Monageer Tavern on November 22 at 8.30 p.m. All support is appreciate­d.

Our club will be selling National Club Draw tickets in the coming weeks. This year we have the added bonus of an extra draw with special prizes for those who buy tickets from us. See the poster below for details. Please support when our members come calling.

Also our clothing collection is being collected again next week, so if you have any old clothes you want to get rid of they can be left to the old complex between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Our under-14 lads who played in sunny Rosslare recently. Very strong first half had us leading by four points at halftime. St Mary’s produced a very strong second half to win the game. RACE TO BE MAYOR

The GAA Mayoral Election Campaign is well under way and the next few weeks will see lots of fundraisin­g activities organised for the candidates.

On Saturday, November 24, Phil’s team will hold a Variety Show in Oulart Hill Bar, beginning at 9 p.m. and on the following day, Sunday the 25th they will host Lunch in Oulart Community Centre, midday to 2 p.m. Later that night, bingo will take place in Oulart Community Centre.

On December 1 Martin ‘Sponger’ Fortune’s team will hold ‘Come Dine with me’ in the Ballagh Community Centre while on December 2, 9 and 16 Phil’s team will hold bingo. As this year is the 25th Anniversar­y of Oulart-The Ballagh winning their first Senior Hurling Title (1994) Phil’s team will launch a Souvenir Calendar in Oulart Community Centre on Saturday, December 15. And if you want to buy a real Christmas Tree to support Sponger’s Mayoral campaign, please place your order with Declan at 087 3456523.

The two candidates’ teams also have raffle tickets circulatin­g, with valuable prizes on offer. We would encourage as many as possible to support the events as all the proceeds go to Oulart-The Ballagh GAA Club. Please follow the Facebook page for more details.

LOCAL PLACE NAME PROJECT

Some 22nd Wexford Cub Scouts have been working on a community project on local place names, called Meitheal Logainm. It’s an online project inviting people to enter local names of fields, lanes, crossroads etc. into a national database, as an opportunit­y to preserve and share the minor placenames in their native areas.

We are inviting the community to come along any time between 4.30 p.m. and 7 p.m. next Wednesday, November 21, at the Bygone Days house in Lower Oulart, where they can share their local knowledge of place names with us. We are looking for anything that would not be found on a normal map eg. the name that a field or lane may have been called locally. The Oulart-The Ballagh Unit of Community First Responders is live, seven nights a week and all day at weekends, assisting the National Ambulance Service, on a totally voluntary basis.

BOOK FAIR

The Book Fair will take place in the school from Monday, November 19, to Wednesday, November 21, Pupils will have the opportunit­y to buy books on Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The book fair will also be open to parents and pupils on Tuesday from 2.40 to 3.30 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The book fair is a wonderful opportunit­y to buy popular and recent publicatio­ns and the school earns many new books through the book fair sales.
