Legendary game has been tastefully revitalised
PEOPLE have a tendency to internally embellish their childhood memories of video games. Childish wonder and the softening effect of passing years are a potent concoction – a brew strong enough to fool the mind’s eye into rounding out the harsh edges and enchancing the pixellated textures of early gaming classics.
The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a masterful example of a developer’s uncanny ability to craft a homage to this peculiar phenomenon, revitalising a legendary game in a way only people who have had these experiences of childlike fascination could.
With only a smattering of tasteful tweaking, the levels feel familiar and welcoming, allowing us to enjoy anew the vibrant and simple beauty of the environments.
By contrast, the controls and movement of Spyro feels drastically more modern, in a way that reassures you of your absolute control over the character, something that janky older titles could never match. Spyro now hops and glides effortlessly, responding to even the most hair-trigger touches. The analog stick controls make for a pleasant experience.
However, the other edge to the sword is that such fluidity perhaps make the Spyro games a tad too easy, particularly when paired with the sharpened gaming skills of a seasoned adult.
Where the developers have taken liberties, the games have only benefitted. Many monsters and enemies have been imbued with delightful personalities and gifted new character models. Of particular enjoyment are the many dragons of the original Spyro, who’s demeanours are incredibly infectious and memorable.
Even the soundtrack has been subjected to the masterful touch of the developers. Each number in Stewart Copeland’s original soundtrack has been modernised and improved, with only the original melodies remaining intact.
The entire three games can be, much like the original trilogy, completed in about 20-25 hours. While they are by no means difficult, they are nonetheless a charming and fulfilling experience. Collectable purists, kids and couch casuals alike can rejoice in the wonder that is the Spyro trilogy.
