CHRISTMAS MAGIC IS IN THE AIR AS GOREY’S LIGHTS SWITCHED ON

-

Eager children gathered along Gorey’s Main Street on Saturday evening to catch a glimpse of Mr and Mrs Claus switching on the dazzling Christmas lights that line the streets.

Santa, along with Mrs Claus, arrived in Gorey town on their sleigh and headed for the main stage where they greeted the thousands of youngsters in the crowd. Before commencing the all important job of the Big Switch On, Santa collected kids letters in the post box that was situated outside Market House.

Festive entertainment on stage helped spread the Christmas spirit, with music and a children’s disco provided by DJ Dave Redmond.

‘It was by far the best switch on to date,’ said Cllr Fionntan O Suilleabhain, who sits on the Christmas Lights committee. ‘We are all really pleased with how it went and received positive feedback from many parents.’

Cllr Suilleabhain also reported that the crowds stretched the whole way down the main street and queues formed outside many businesses who decided to stay open late for the big switch on.

‘At one stage, I could see nearly hundred people queuing for hot drinks outside Partridges,’ he added.

This year, the lights committee had a fireworks display after Santa switched on the hundreds of beautiful lights that are hanging across the Main Street and draped in the trees.

‘The only thing we would do differently for next year is pick a better location for the fireworks display as not everyone got a good view,’ added Cllr O Suilleabhain.

Santa and Mrs Claus paid a special visit to the cordoned off area for spectators with special needs to say hello to the children there.

The festive couple were also given a hand on the night by some of their little elves who travelled with them to Gorey from the north pole.
