Local authority estates are honoured for excellent upkeep

WEXFORD County Council has acknowledged the hard work of people living in local authority estates for the work they have done in keeping their areas clean, tidy and picturesque.

Awards were presented to estates in each of the county’s four district areas at a reception in County Hall.

The awards were handed out by the Chairpersons from each of the four Municipal District Councils to the winners from their respective areas.

Commenting on the initiative the local authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Tom Enright, said the scheme is aimed at encouraging people to take pride in their areas.

‘This award scheme is about fostering pride in local authority estates and recognising and rewarding individuals and groups for their efforts,’ he said.

The awards ceremony took place as part of the annual Residents’ Day event organised by the local authority to acknowledge the work of residents who work hard on the upkeep of their estates.

The awards recognise the ongoing voluntary contribution of residents with regard to maintaining their respective areas.

The awards for best kept local authority estates in each of the four MDC areas included: Mountain View, Rathnure (New Ross area); Oak Tree Heights, Castlebridge (Wexford area); Croghan View, Coolgreaney (Gorey area) and Cois Abhainn, Blackwater (Enniscorthy area).

The latter estate also won the award for best kept local authority estate in the county.

The runners-up across the county included: Canon Murphy Park, Clonroche (New Ross); Lakelands Big, Bridgetown (Wexford); Doire Mholing, Monamolin (Gorey) and St John’s Terrace, Caim (Enniscorthy).

Prizes were also awarded for the best estate feature and the winners in that category included: The Villas, Clonro- che (New Ross); Bernadette Place (Wexford); Orchard Way, Camolin (Gorey) and Carrig Ban, Bunclody (Enniscorthy).

Among the areas that got a ‘notable mention’ were: Abbeyview, Campile (New Ross); Crossfarnogue, Kilmore Quay (Wexford); Allenwood Drive (Gorey) and St Bernadette’s, Glenbrien (Enniscorthy).

While each of the districts had their respective winners the most prestigious award handed out at the ceremony was for the best overall local authority estate in the county and that accolade went to Cois Abhainn, in Blackwater.

Awards were also presented on the day to children who won prizes in what proved to be a very popular art competition that was also organised to coincide with the Residents’ Day initiative
