Chamber CEO in the mix for Fine Gael selection

CLLR JOHN HEGARTY COULD CONSIDER RUNNING IN WEXFORD AREA WHERE HE NOW LIVES AND WORKS

GOREY Chamber of Commerce CEO Diarmuid Devereux is branching out into the world of local politics after it was announced that he has been put forward by the Camolin and Ballycanew districts for Friday’s Fine Gael selection convention.

Mr Devereux from Gorey said his name has been thrown into the hat along with Cllr Anthony Donohoe, who was nominated by Craanford/Monaseed and Hollyfort branches.

Mr Devereux, who is a former Wexford GAA County Board chairman, was appointed as CEO of Gorey Chamber in May 2017 and holds the position in a voluntary capacity.

It is unclear whether Kilanerin native Cllr John Hegarty, the current chairman of Gorey Municipal District, will run in the Gorey district or whether he will run in Wexford town. Cllr Hegarty who is vice principal of Wexford CBS currently lives in Wexford town.

Mr Devereux from Gorey said his name has been thrown into the hat along with Cllr Anthony Donohoe, who was nominated by Craanford/Monaseed and Hollyfort branches.

Cllr Hegarty who is vice principal of Wexford CBS currently lives in Wexford town.

He was unavailabl­e for comment at the time of going to press.

Cllr Donohoe from Annagh said he has enjoyed representi­ng the people for the past five years and said he hopes to retain his seat in the May elections.

Mr Devereux, who is a former Wexford GAA County Board chairman, was appointed as CEO of Gorey Chamber in May, 2017 and holds the position in a voluntary capacity.

He worked with Telecom Éireann and Eircom for 28 years and served a five-year term as chairman of Wexford GAA until December 2016. During this time, Mr Devereux helped greatly improve the local organisati­on’s finances reducing its debts by more than half.

The selection convention will take place on Friday, February 1.
