Adam defeats clubmate

-

TWO ST. Joseph’s clubmates went head to head in the Junior singles county final.

Adam Walsh and Josh Kavanagh both ended up scoring 60 points each in what must have been a gruelling encounter, but Adam was triumphant on this occasion, winning by two games to one.

Matthew Hynes (St. Mary’s) had no problems overcoming the challenge of Jim Nolan from Kilymyshall in the Over-35 singles final, prevailing 21-5, 21-8.

In the Junior ‘B’ doubles county final, Michael Busher and Robert Byrne from Bridgetown beat Seán Stanners and Ian Curran from St. Martin’s 21-11, 21-10.

The St. Martin’s men made amends by assisting clubmates James and David Stanners in defeating a Castlebridge team which included John Roche, David Kenny, Pádraig Devereux and Stephen Murphy in the county Junior BCD team championship final.

St. Mary’s player, Marguerite Gore, was far too strong for Leanne Boland from Coolgreany in the women’s Junior ‘B’ singles final, winning on a scoreline of 21-7, 21-3.

Davidstown were represented on the winners’ podium by Kevin Doyle and Tomás O’Shea when capturing the Golden Masters ‘B’ doubles title against Pádraig Devereux and James Mythen from Castlebridge.

In the Golden Masters ‘B’ singles, the title was won by Ricky Barron from Barntown who overcame Jimmy Dunne of Kilmyshall 21-10, 21-14.

Kilmyshall did, however, secure a gold medal on the same night when Tom Byrne beat Brendan Murphy from Castlebridge 21-10, 21-12 to win the Silver Masters ‘B’ singles title.

Ballyhogue were also represented in the county finals by Liam Rossiter and Colm Parnell who overcame Robert Cogley and Dean O’Neill from Ballymitty to capture the Junior ‘C’ doubles crown on a scoreline of 10-21, 21-17, 21-3.

More county finals will be played this week.

Meanwhile, Galen Riordan’s form is showing no signs of abating as he continues to storm his way through the Leinster Intermediate singles championship.

Having won the 2018 All-Ireland Junior singles, he continued his rich vein of form last weekend by accounting for one of Kilkenny’s hottest prospects, Shane Dunne. He know faces Gary McConnell from Meath in the Leinster final.

Daniel Kavanagh went close two years ago, but Wexford haven’t won an Intermediate singles title since Gavin Buggy was victorious in 2008.

Gavin’s prowess in the court also shows no sign of abating as he will contest the Leinster Senior singles final this coming Wednesday evening in Garryhill against Peter Funchion of Kilkenny.

Galen and Gavin will battle it out in our county Senior singles final in the coming weeks in what promises to be an exciting game.

Darren O’Toole will face Brian Mahon from Kilkenny in the Leinster Junior singles semi-final, having accounted for Aaron Geoghegan from Carlow 21-14, 21-10.

Adam Walsh will meet Chris Doyle from Wicklow in the other semi-final, so hopefully we’ll see an all-Wexford final this year.

David Kenny lost out to Jamie Balfe in the Leinster Junior ‘B’ singles, but there are still three Wexford players left standing in the Junior ‘C’ singles in Shane Birney, Geoff Atkinson and Ciarán Power who had a good win against David Broderick (21-14, 21-16).

In the Masters ‘B’ singles semi-final, Fergal McWilliams defeated Bob Byrne 21-13, 21-10 and will now face either Noel Doherty from Kilkenny or Wexford’s own Michael O’Neill in the final.

There were two Wexford derby games in the Diamond Masters ‘B’ singles and the Golden Masters ‘B’ singles, as Tom Byrne defeated clubmate Jimmy Dunne and Ricky Barron beat Tommy Armstrong 21-13, 12-21, 21-13.
