NEW ROSS

Fourball stableford sponsored by The Shelmaliers Golfing Society: 1, M.J. Cullen (19) and Barry Mullane (14), 43 points; 2, Derek Ronan (2) and Charlie Bradley (18), 42 points (last nine); 3, Mossy Ryan (17) and Denis Kirwan (12), 42 points (last six).

There was a good turn-out on the fairways, and the course presented well throughout the weekend as is reflected in the scoring. Well done to all involved.

Next Sunday there is a change as the last round of the winter league has been re-scheduled. There will instead be a singles strokeford competition which is sponsored by Seamus Doyle Painting Contractor, New Ross.

This format is an enjoyable one and adds some variety to the usual formats of competition golf.

The Captains’ drive-in will take place on Sunday, February 17. There will be a mixed foursomes competition as we had last year. This promises to be a great day on both golfing and social fronts for the club.

NEW ROSS LADIES

Wednesday, January 23, 14-hole stableford sponsored by McCauley’s Chemist: 1, Marie Therese Wall (19), 30 points - one penalty point = 29 points (last seven); 2, Marguerite Sutton (17), 29 points; 3, Anne O’Grady (25), 26 points (last one).

After round three of the winter league, the joint leaders are the ‘Grippers’ and ‘Magic Maggies’ on 209 points, and following close behind are the ‘Birdie Babes’ on 208 points.

‘Par to Bar’ and the ‘Sharp Shooters’ are both on 206 points. The ‘Pretty Putters’ are alone on 204 points.

The ‘Happy Hookers’ and ‘Ball Bursters’ are both on 200 points, with ‘Tee Rific’ on 178 points and ‘The Swingers’ on 118 points.

The final round of winter league has to be played by Wednesday, February 13, so get out there ladies and do your best for your team!

This week’s competition on Wednesday, January 30, is 14-hole stableford, sponsored by Ray French. There are lines on the timesheet for the nine-hole competition also.

Our next presentation will be on Wednesday, February 6, at 7.30 p.m. and will cover all the competitions from January 9.

The presentation of prizes will be followed by an input from Mary Dowling on teams and team management, and also the impact of the new rules of golf on matchplay. We hope to see lots of lady members in the clubhouse on that night.

The Captains’ drive-in will take place on Sunday, February 17. There will be a mixed foursomes competition as we had last year.

Details of the format and how to enter will be sent out by e-mail and included in our next week’s update.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

What started as a drizzly, misty day, turned out quite pleasant for our outing on Thursday. With a changed champagne format in operation, with all players having to take at least three drives and also pick the best drive on holes one to 18, scoring was expected to be way down on previous weeks.

But, not a bit of it, as even with heavy underfoot conditions these Seniors kept rattling in the high scores. We even had two cards disqualified where the markers pencilled in wrong totals for the hole being played.

In fact, one of the cards thrown out would indeed have been the winners provided the correct scores were included, and the second card demoted would also have been in the prizes. The old rule, ‘mark the scores down after each hole played’, might have avoided the disqualifications.

After all this, a three-person team composed of Hughie O’Connor (19), Richie Aylward (19) and Seán O hUginn (23) took the honours with a fine score of 98 points (92 plus the bonus six points).

Second with 96 points were Billy Redmond (19), John Murphy (20), Frank Boyle (23) and Tom Kent (25). The 94 points scored by Tony Harford (14), John Aylward (18), John F. Roche (21) and Mick Long (23) proved good enough to claim third prize.

With the three-drive rule now in operation, the handiest way of keeping tabs is to mark down in the right-hand side of the score card after each hole whether it was player A, player B, player C, or player D whose drive was taken - it would make it easier for everybody and avoid any confusion afterwards.

PAULINE’S SOCIETY

Our Christmas outing proved to be a successful one, played in the New Ross golf club course. A big turn-out playing a scramble was popular with all those competing.

The team led by Nigel Cody, with two visitors, Richie Fennelly and Johnny Maher, were first past the post by a margin of one point.

Gerry Foley, Colin Fenlon and visitor Nicky Murphy followed closely behind by taking second slot. Brendan Byrne, Pat McGrath and visitor Tommy Liston took third place.

The two nearest to the pin prizes went to Richie Fennelly, which was a fair achievement. Well done to all concerned.

On February 9 we will come out of hibernation to tackle the challenging Gowran Park golf course, with a tee-off time of 10 a.m.

Those intending to travel should be at the course no later than 9.30 a.m.

Once again we would ask members and visitors to indicate their intention to play by placing their names on the sheet in Pauline’s Bar before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6.
