KILTEALY POST OFFICE CLOSES

Many people in Kiltealy and indeed surrounding areas were very sad to see Kiltealy post office close on Saturday last leaving yet another rural village without this very important service.

Kiltealy post office is one of 11 to have closed in the county over the past few months as part of An Post’s consolidation process which has previously been termed an ‘assault on rural villages’. The closest post office is now Ballindaggin 4km away, while Bunclody is 12.4km away.

This closure will have a huge impact on the local community especially the elderly, but apart from the service many will also miss the chats with postmistress Mary and anecdotes from Séamus. The post office was part of the life of the village sadly that corner will now be silent.

After its closure on Saturday tea and refreshments were served in the local Community Hall by Kiltealy Development committee where all had many little stories to tell about the years gone by in Kiltealy post office.

LATE CATHERINE JORDAN

The death occurred peacefully on Friday, January 18, of Catherine (Kathy) Jordan, Monbeg, Ballindaggin. Deepest sympathy is extended to her daughters Sr. Sara, Mary, Bridie, Katie, Rose, Marian, Elizabeth and to her sons Jim, Martin, Michael, John and Colm. Also to her sister Liz and extended family.

Catherine (née O’Toole, Knockduff) was in her 95th year and was wife of the late Dermot. Catherine was a woman of deep faith and generous nature and devoted her time to her large family and friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend and will be fondly remembered for her quiet, gentle, sincere and neighbourly disposition and her passing will leave a void hard to be filled.

There was a large attendance at her funeral Mass in Ballindaggin Church after which she was laid to rest in adjoining cemetery. May she rest in peace.
