Restoration of graveyard
Gorey Tidy Towns in conjunction with Wexford County Council will undertake a number of major projects this year to enhance the town as part of the Gorey 400 celebrations.
A restoration of the historic graveyard in Market Square, a showpiece flower bed at the Monument and a mural depicting a Gorey streetscape are among the projects planned.
The work at the Market Square graveyard is being spearheaded by Christ Church Gorey with Gorey Tidy Towns and Wexford County Council. A detailed plan of work has been drawn up by an archaeologist to ensure best practice is used to preserve the site. Paths and seats and some appropriate planting will be introduced without disturbing any of the gravestones according to a design by Paul Woods of Kilmurry Nursery.
‘This is a major project for Gorey,’ said Gorey Tidy Towns chairman Billy Halford. ‘This graveyard contains the tomb of Bishop Thomas Ram who secured the Charter of Gorey, or Newborough as it was then, in 1619. This work will help preserve the site for future generations.’
