Creagh students’ rockets are out of this world
CREAGH College students celebrated World Space Week when first year students launched rockets that they had designed themselves.
‘It was great craic and the designs were out of this world, we now have we have sky high hopes for these budding rocket scientists. Congratulations to Craig Mantle whose rocket travelled the furthest and scooped first prize, which was a space themed bag of goodies from the European Space Agency,’ said organiser Julie Tobin.
First year student Filip Klempka came a close second and many other rockets on the day made a decent attempt at leaving the earth’s atmosphere.
Deputy Principal Declan O’Toole said he was hugely impressed with the students’ creativity and engineering after only a few weeks of studying science in Creagh College, which is proving to be a popular subject.
Two of the senior members of the STEM team, Isobel Cummins and Ethan Smyth were on standby to help out with each mission.
‘The STEM team work hard to promote STEM activities in the school and are bringing awareness to the whole school community about the importance of science, technology, engineering and maths in our lives,’ said Julie.
‘They have done a fantastic job creating a STEM wall, which has lots of interesting information about STEM careers and current affairs,’ she said.
Julie said that now the students enjoyed their first taste of a science competition, they will go on to following Creagh College tradition of success at national competitions.
