Celebrity chef brings the taste of Oulart across the Atlantic Ocean
FOR most emigrants the taste of home is something often sought but rarely found, a culinary experience impossible to replicate no matter how hard they try.
And when an ocean separates you from the familiar aromas of the family kitchen one can’t simply pop in for a spoonful of mammy’s famous stew. In these circumstances the only solution is to bring the kitchen across the ocean, which is exactly what Oulart woman Marian Sinnott did in a brand-new episode of Tastes Like Home.
Airing next Tuesday, November 11 on RTÉ 1 at 7.30 p.m. the programme sees host Catherine Fulvio visit Marian to discuss the chicken paprika dish she has made her own.
‘I’ve been cooking this dish for 30 years now,’ says Marian. ‘I adapted it from a pork recipe in a housewife’s classic cook book from the 1970’s. It’s rich and creamy and a really satisfying, indulgent one pot meal with a good dose of sherry.’
And when it comes to Marian’s cooking, one of her biggest fans is daughter Sarah-Jo. Now living and working in Boston, Sarah-Jo rarely gets to sample her mother’s chicken paprika these days so, to rectify that, Catherine learns how to make Marian’s dish and heads Stateside to bring a taste like home to Sarah-Jo and her new friends.
Having first left Ireland to move to London in 2015, Sarah-Jo relocated to Boston in October 2017 to work as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacoepidemiology at Harvard University.
Discussing her experience on the programme, Sarah-Jo said, ‘From my perspective as an emigrant, this show was a chance to think about all the amazing food we have at home and how meals and food are such an intrinsic part of how our family relationships were built and sustained. You really miss that when you’re away.’
And Marian paid tribute to the host of Tastes Like Home for her ability to make people feel at ease, ‘For me the whole experience was totally amazing. For someone who never saw a TV camera let alone be standing in front of one, it was a real pleasure to have Catherine and the team in our home. Catherine, has such a warm personality, and has the ability to make you feel like your her best friend. It was so exciting to have them all here in Oulart.’
