Gorey Cricket Club to focus on its schools programme
HOPES are high for the future expectations of the Gorey Cricket Club following its annual general meeting which saw chairperson Alphonsus Fitzgerald outline a vision around structures on future competitions and local participation.
In a welcoming address, Alphonsus noted the club’s successes but also the challenges it still faces going forward.
He spoke about the work of Cricket Leinster and the Gorey club’s involvement with the group in recent months, particularly with the compiling of the cricket archives.
On the night the chairperson revealed a documented history of cricket in North Wexford, which included some score books and pictures belonging to Camolin Cricket Club, with some dating back to 1900.
Compliments were paid to the committee as well as popular coach, Chris Sheeran, who departs for the UK soon.
‘The committee ensures correct policies and practices and has fully embraced the ethos of diversity and being inclusive for all. It was magnanimously agreed that Chris Sheeran has brought much enthusiasm and knowledge to the many aspiring children he coached and we wish him well in his new opportunities,’ said Alphonsus.
Newly elected committee member Gary Murphy, along with team captain Anslem Diaz and Naleem Ibrahim will occupy roles on the committee along with existing members Mark Leonard and Haley Squire, DLP.
It was decided that a three year strategy will be implemented with the schools programme at its heart and those in attendance heard that there will be further constructive measures in growing the sport through female participation along with the flagship senior team who are all eager to progress.
Al thanked Courtown Hibs for the use of facilities as well as local sponsors, Sports Active, Leinster Cricket, Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District, and the many schools who participated.
