Bright future for Gorey’s SOCGA club after AGM

- By CATHY LEE

SPECIAL Olympics Club Gorey Area (SOCGA) held its AGM after what it described as a very busy year for the club and all athletes, parents, guardians, carers and volunteers were encouraged to attend.

All were welcomed by chairperson Aidan Kelly and the highlight of the night was hearing first hand from SOCGA athlete John Doyle who did everyone proud when he competed at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.

John engaged in a question and answer session on the night and told of his experiences.

‘The club is very proud of our badminton athlete John Doyle who had a very successful trip to Abu Dhabi where he competed in the World games and returned with two bronze medals.

‘He said what he enjoyed the most was meeting lots of people from different countries. He thanked everyone who helped him achieve his success,’ said Roisin Duncan.

On the evening, there was a note of thanks and well wishes to badminton coach Georgina Ward who is stepping down from her role.

‘There was a welcome for several new athletes and volunteers, the future is bright for our club. This is year one of a four year cycle of competitive events. With these coming up, the hard work and training starts now,’ said Roisin.

Following an election on the night, the new committee were named as chairperson Aidan Kelly, vice chairperson Leanne Bryan, treasurer Kevin Molloy, secretary/PRO Roisin Duncan, assistant secretary Naomi Besanson, assistant treasurer Antoinette McLoughlin, safeguarding/medical officers Beryl Kelly and Catriona Dixon, volunteer officer Evelyn Walsh and head coaches Ann Wadding and Margaret Kenny.
