- By BRENDAN KEANE

THE Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy TD, has laid the first bricks at a 52-unit housing development in Enniscorthy that are being constructed on behalf of Clúid Housing.

The development is being carried out at Pairc na gCon, Greenville Lane, and speaking about the scheme the New Business Manager with Clúid, David Murphy, said the units will go towards meeting the housing demand in the town.

‘These homes will provide a number of different housing options,’ said Mr Murphy.

He added the units will offer a choice to families, single, and older people to have a home for life.

Mr Murphy said his organisation, which is Ireland’s largest approved housing body, has worked extensively with Wexford County Council and Rebuilding Ireland on the project.

‘We thank them for their commitment to delivering these homes,’ he said.

‘This development will help us in our aim of delivering 2,500 homes over three years,’ he added.

The houses, which are being constructed on behalf of Clúid Housing, will include six, two-bedroom apartments; four, two-bedroomed houses; six, three-bedroomed duplexes/ maisonettes; 20, three-bedroomed houses; 10, three-bedroomed dormer bungalows and six, four-bedroomed houses.

In launching the development work Minister Murphy expressed delight at being able to mark the start of construction.

‘Clúid and Wexford County Council secured funding from my Department and the Housing Finance Agency to build these homes,’ he said.

‘Wexford County Council has a large number of projects underway across the county [and] many in partnership with Assisted Housing Bodies,’ he added.

Clúid is financing the development of the Enniscorthy units through a combination of a Capital Advance and Availability Payment, from the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, and a loan facility with the Housing Finance Agency (HFA).

It’s expected that rent on the units will be based on Wexford County Council’s rent policy and the council will retain full nomination rights on the properties.

Minister Murphy told this newspaper at the site yesterday that it was great to see work begin on the houses and that inclusive of local authority builds and housing agency projects around 900 house projects are underway in the county.

Earlier in the day he was in Gorey to launch the €17m water scheme and revealed that €7.6m will be provided to develop waste water treatment plants in Ballyhack, Arthurstown and Duncannon.

The Chief Executive Officer of Wexford County Council, Tom Enright, also spoke to this newspaper at the Pairc na gCon launch and said the 900 homes currently being developed include 500 HAP units.

Mr Enright went on to say that the units in Enniscorthy, which are being constructed by Byrne & Byrne Construction Ltd, will be completed in 12 to 14 months.
