Water stations a refreshing sight

- By CATHY LEE

DRINKING WATER will now be available free of charge at various hydration stations across Gorey town as installation works are now complete on the first fountain which was launched at Gorey Civic Square last week.

A spokesperson described the new initiative as major and all who were on hand to be some of the first to taste the water confirmed it was of good quality.

‘It will encourage people to top up refillable bottles rather than buying single use bottles of water. Wexford County Council and Gorey Tidy Towns installed three water filling stations at Gorey Civic Square, Paul Funge Boulevard and on the Main street at Ulster bank and the project came about through a community enhancement grant of €3,000 to part fund the installation of the fountains, with Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District funding the balance as well as the installation works,’ said a spokesperson for Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District.

‘A water filling station will also be installed at the town park once redevelopment works have finished and other locations as funds allow’.

Speaking at the launch, Gorey Tidy Towns chairperson Billy Halford thanked all involved in getting the project off the ground.

‘Caring for the environment is at the heart of our work in Gorey Tidy Towns. We were anxious to help people reduce their dependence on single use plastics, and we felt that these refill stations would be a great way to do so,’ he said.

The cylinder was manufactured locally by Kent Stainless in Wexford.

‘We were delighted to support local jobs for this work and we hope people will choose to refill their water bottles when they are out and about, rather than buying single use bottles,’ said Billy.

Wexford County Council’s Cliona Connolly from the environment section was in attendance to give out refillable bottles to people which saw ‘rehydrate, refill, repeat’, as well as students at Gorey Community School, councillors and representatives from Kent Stainless for the unveiling of the first new bottle refill station.
