GOREY’S 400 TREES FIND NEW HOMES
MEMBERS of Gorey Tidy Towns gathered early to set up camp at the Pavilion at Gorey’s Civic Square to distribute 400 trees to people of all ages in north Wexford.
Earlier this year, as part of the Gorey 400 celebrations, those interested in taking part were invited to collect and plant a tree during a sign up campaign and they could choose either a Birch, Mountain, Ash, Apple (eater or cooker) or a native oak, aimed for those in larger areas.
After a tremendous response, it is now hoped that those who took trees will go ahead and take photographs and share their planting ceremonies with Gorey Tidy Towns on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
‘It’s a fantastic project and thank you to Cliona Connolly in County Hall for sorting the trees for us, to Mary Kinsella in the Gorey office for doing a huge amount of work on compiling the names and driving this project forward with our PRO Fintan Lambe. Thanks too to the town gardener Maura Higgins and her team for their work and all the groups who let us collect signatures at their events during the summer,’ said Chairperson of Gorey Tidy Towns Billy Halford.
‘We all know the importance of planting trees so any chance we get or in any suitable space we find, we’ll plant a tree or a pollinator friendly plant. This project is a great way to get the wider public involved and to take action to improve biodiversity and to combat climate change by helping reduce carbon emissions’.
An oak tree will be presented to each of the schools in Gorey Town as part of the project, not only to mark 400 years of the town, but to highlight the important role young people can play in championing environmental issues.
