Round-up of the latest Rackard League ties

Sensational show puts paid to Island/Mayglass hopes

- DEAN GOODISON

LORETO (GOREY) 8-9 OLI/MAYGLASS 0-2

A SENSATIONAL performance by the girls from Bunscoil Loreto (Gorey) saw them take the Rackard League girls’ football Roinn ‘B’ title in a freezing St. Patrick’s Park recently.

It’s hard to believe any team could stick with the champions in this form, as they were sensational all over the field.

The Our Lady’s Island/Mayglass combination battled all the way to the end but there was just no beating the Gorey girls on the night.

While the winners had plenty of attacking threat, arguably their defence was just as impressive.

Sophie Whelan in goal never put a foot wrong, and the full-back line of Aveen Kavanagh, Ruby Murdiff and Lauren Fitzpatrick was impenetrable.

However, their most impressive trio had to be the half-back combination. Cadi Kehoe-Lloyd and Kittyona Obasuyi-James were superb, but the best player on the field might have been the excellent Ellie Twomey.

In midfield, Jorja Hennell and Chloe-Ann Kenny worked in plenty of ball to a set of forwards that all scored, apart from the hard-working, productive Lexie Bell.

Rebecca Keating got the opening goal in the second minute, and she added a point along with Sarah Higgins as her side went 1-2 to nil up.

OLI/Mayglass kept their opponents at bay for a while, but the sheer quality of attacking play was impossible to repel for long spells.

Keating and Higgins goaled, and Amber Farrell snuck one past Aoibhín Kelly to make it 4-3 to nil.

Lucy Flanagan-Kavanagh had been a constant source of assists earlier in the half but got a late hat-trick before the break as Gorey moved well clear.

The south county schools went close to a goal themselves through

Ava Wallace, and did get on the board with a classy Keola Calvert point to make it 7-5 to 0-1 at the interval.

Katie Flanagan-Kavanagh and Jorja Hennell got on the scoresheet, and Keating completed her hat-trick as Bunscoil Loreto started the second as they finished the first.

Yet, to their credit, Our Lady’s Island/Mayglass kept their heads up and were the better team in the last ten minutes.

Jolie Rankin and Rayna Thompson both went close to the goal their efforts deserved.

The latter did add a classy point in the last few minutes, but it was Bunscoil Loreto Gorey’s day as they took the Roinn ‘B’ title.
